School's out and life update

Happy Pride! I figured that since I'm finally done with classes and I'm home from Pride festivities, I can finally sit down and post to my poor, neglected journal.

So, I've completed my first year of grad school. Woo!! I'm halfway done! It's hard to believe I have two months with no homework, and my free time is actually free for a while. It's also hard to believe how much my life has changed in one year. The time went by quickly, but at the same time pre-grad school life seems very long ago.

On the whole, I am so much happier with my life now. In only a year, I've come a long way from that person who was feeling miserable and isolated in boring and unfulfilling office jobs. Now, though grad school is often immensely stressful, my life is full of meaning, learning, joy, good work, and good people. I loved my internship at the U of M GLBTA Programs Office, and I greatly value the opportunity to feel like I'm a part of the queer community again. The people there are welcoming and fun, and I've learned more than I ever thought I would about many forms of social justice and anti-oppression work. I've learned a lot from my classes and professors, some being more enjoyable than others, of course. And I really like my classmates and the budding community we have. I guess the good part of spending 12 hours of a weekend in class with a bunch of people who are stressed out by the same stuff is that it gives us ample opportunity to get to know and support each other. I love being surrounded by interesting and kind people who share similar interests with me, though we are also very different from each other in many ways, and I enjoy that as well.

I'm so glad that I decided to pursue social work. My values still strongly align with the field, and I'm excited to get out into the community and do some good. Next year I will be interning in a hospital setting at a clinic for people with HIV/AIDS. It will be a very different experience for me, but I'm sure it will be interesting and I'll learn a lot.

Oh yeah, and I have a part-time job now working at a chemical dependency treatment center for women and children. I am also liking that job so far. Good people, good work, and interesting. No day is ever the same, and I love that. It makes the day go by quickly and is a welcome change from the dull, repetitive work I've done before.

So, that's a brief life update from me. I'm sure looking forward to relaxing and playing this summer, and then seeing where else my life will take me.
