1. baroque music:
   based on Portuguese term for an irregularly shaped pearl, originally having a negative connotation when it was used to refer to music that went against the Palestrinian paradigm; the term commonly given to music written between around the time of Monteverdi (late 1500's-early 1600's) and the mid 1700's. Some say that the baroque period ended with the death of J.S. Bach in 1750.
2. continuo:
   the bass line behind most baroque music- it's driving force. Continuo playing is a fascinating art, which relies heavily on improvization for keyboard players.
3. flauto dolce:
   "sweet flute"- Italian word for the recorder
4. henry purcell:
   English baroque composer, one of the first to write for oboes, famous for his opera Dido and Aeneas.
5. j.s. bach:
   (1685-1750), an unparalleled master of counterpoint and harmony, probably my favorite composer.
6. madrigals:
   secular vocal choir compositions of the Renaissance. Palestrina begged forgiveness on his death-bed for having composed them in his youth.
7. muzsikas:
   a unique and excellent Hungarian folk ensemble, featuring the voice of Marta Sebestyen.
8. plants:
   things that grow, often in soil
9. saskia coolen:
   fine Dutch recorder player, whom I've met and played in masterclasses for at Amherst
10. van eyck:
    blind Dutch composer and recorderist, considered to be the first recorder virtuoso. He composed the first published volumes for solo recorder, "Der Fluyten Lust Hof." He was also the carillon player for a church.
