So, I saw it, and I was so impressed with Ledger's Joker that I deleted my y so srs icon. Why? Because he was TOO EVIL.
Srsly. I feel like watching Last of the Time Lords at this point would be like watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.
So, all in all, I was super duper impressed with the movie. The joker as an anarchist is definitely interesting, and I love Alfred's insight into him. Harvey Dent was WONDERFUL and it makes me SO SAD that I was too young to really understand his role in the old batman movies. Aaron Eckhart.. OMG. Perfect acting, spot on, scary stuff. I identified with him the most. I didn't like Maggie what's her name as Rachel much, but I don't like Rachel much. Ledger was amazing.. and Christian Bale really took it home. Morgan Freeman was good too. Best acting of all, though, was Gary Oldman. Holy crap, he was amazing. Also, the criminal in the boat who threw the detonator out the window was brilliant.
Plot wise, the whole thing was dripping with pathos a little too much but it was well-structured and Dent's descent into being Two-Face was handled beautifully. It scares me a little, because I want to be so much what he is and ... and yet that could so be me. The Joker terrified me becuase... his strategy was basically immune to honor and virtue. There was almost nothing he couldn't do. As weird as it is, I'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about my principles and how they match up to that. This is also going to warp the fantasy game I'm running right now, since my principle NPC is basically Two Face, less the coin and disfigurement and plus a whole lot of weapons. I also thought about Doctor Who and realized that Batman's... well, even worse than the Doctor. Heroes like that really need a cleanup crew, of people who are willing to get their hands dirty. And actually, thinking about it, I think that's what's so great about Death Note--there were principled characters without whose dedication to doing things right, the case wouldn't have been able to thrive, like Souichiro and I would argue Near, L, and Aizawa, and then there were characters who weren't so bound, and whose unique sets of principles and ruthlessness sealed the deal, like Mello and Matsuda.
Anyway, back to the Dark Knight. I also think a lot of the Joker's plans were a little transparent. Something tells me that the boat scene.. I suspect each boat's detonator was its own. Also, did anyone believe Dent was really batman? I doubt it. And frankly, if I had been Dent and Dawes, I wouldn't have separated, I'd have gone off together. If they trusted each other enough to be thinking about marriage, who else to be with when someone like the Joker is around? Honestly, idiots. Especially after Dent bitched at Gordon about his men!
I also noticed that they didn't show Gordon's daughter's face. Good casting choice there.
And I'm very sad about Lucius' behavior toward the whole cell phone sonar thing. Was that a real resignation, or a conditional one? Will he be back if they do another one? I hope so.
Also, Batman/Joker. I ship it. Like burning.
Anyway, I so need another icon to fill my gap, one of Matsuda... Anyone know where I can find anime caps?
