I reserve the right to skip songs. Actually, I"m going to skip a lot of them.
Naturally, for my fandom, I'm picking Doctor Who.
1. R.E.M., "Zither" (2:34) Donna Noble, "Midnight"
Donna smiled, basking in the strange sunlight. It was a beautiful day. A wonderful day. She couldn't believe that the Doctor had passed up the chance and lie in the sun. After all, Diamonds were great, but what about just lying there, relaxing? He didn't do that enough. She worried about him and his running about, never stopping, never looking back...
Still, what was it he said? Nothing could go wrong. She almost felt bad for not following him after he said that. Donna watched enough movies to know that any time you said that, things would go to Hell faster than you could take it back.
For a moment, she felt like the sun might be burning her, and she got up and walked to shade.
2. Smashmouth, "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" (2:30) Ten, The (Simm) Master, Lucy Saxon, "Last of the Time Lords"
He laughed uproariously as his good old friend squirmed on the floor beneath him.
It was glorious! It was beatiful! Even Lucy was laughing this time, laughing at how the old bastard broke his hip trying to get up. Old bastard... that was a funny one. But the Master relished it. He loved being the young one, the one with time left. It was perfect.
He gave the Doctor a swift kick for laughs. "And that, old friend," he warned, relishing the feeling of silk in his own deep voice, "is what you get for trying to hurt a dear old friend. I thought we were close, Doctor, really. You should be ashamed of yourself."
He couldn't get enough of this.
3. Blink-182, "The Rock Show" (2:48) Rose/Ten, sometime during their season
This was not what she expected. Not at all.
He fight right in, standing there, hopping up and down, and for a moment she was embarassed, like a mother taking her son to a concert.
What the hell was the Doctor doing moshing?
For just a moment, lost in the music, the music that by all rights she ought to have been listening to, he seemed young. Younger than she was. So innocent, so simple... And it made her smile. That was nice to see. Nice to see him not so tired, nice to see that worried look in his eyes go. Ever since Gamestation, there'd been something in his eyes... something that wasn't there now.
Rose couldn't help herself. She was embarassed but she got up and she started dancing with him. He looked at her, and smiled that big grin of his, so big she almost thought it was the old him for a minute. She smiled back, and they danced.
4. Godsmack, "I Stand Alone" (4:06) The Master, Martha Jones, Last of the Time Lords
He looked into her eyes and it felt like an eternity.
As he narrated his own actions to himself, he couldn't help but twitch a smirk. Oh, how wrong that sounded. This woman, Martha Jones, she who walked the earth. But why? Why did the Doctor hide behind--no, act through--his companions. It disgusted him. He was just like all the other Time Lords, hands off, manipulating it all from afar.
Now, the Master was different. He did this all with his own hands. His empire, his children, his wife. It was true that he'd gotten some financial help from Lucy, but he'd also taken Lucy places she'd never seen... and besides, she was a resource, not an agent of his behalf. Hell, he'd never trust Lucky.
And yet he stared into the dark, glaring eyes of Martha Jones and he saw the eyes of his Doctor instead, staring back at him. His Doctor, who had an idea. His Doctor, who would lose this time. How could some little girl hope to overcome him?
He laughed.
5. Evanescence, "Everybody's Fool" (3:15) Donna Noble, post-"Journey's End"
Nightmares and dreams and tears.
She didn't know what was wrong with her, lately. She couldn't grasp it. She hadn't really felt right, of course, but she could chalk that up to all this aliens business, if someone of it really were true. Or to not sleeping. Actually, she didn't remember much, lately.
But she remembered something. Something that came to her in the middle of the night and took her breath away. Like a bad breakup, like... like losing Lance. Scattered thoughts. Faces she'd never seen, faces she didn't remember. And one, most of all... A face with dark eyes, so dark. WAs this him? The dream man she'd loved and she hated? She thought of him and all she could feel was a broken heart.
"I never would," she murmured to herself as she filed the papers, thinking of him. But she would. But she would, becuase she was him and he was her and...
She collapsed, muttering, "I never would have done that to myself."
6. Jayson Litrio, Zelda 3 "TheGoddessAppears(Trinity)" OC Remix (3:19) Handy!Rose, post-"Journey's End" (hahaha, this one is made of special fail as I try elicit season 1 plottage)
Running, running, as fast as he legs can take him, speeding so fast his hearst might burst out of his chest, excited, living the moment out all over again.
It's been so long, so very long, nearly a month, a momth of him trying to get acclimated and make nice with the boss, and now she's back and even as a part of the old him nags at him, "You shouldn't get so attached," he called to her, "ROSE!" and ran.
That was gone now. That burden, that fear. No more self to lose, now he was half of someone else, and Donna fully supported it. Donna... poor Donna. But he had another Godess to worship now.
He ran to Rose in the terminal and swept her up off her little feet, taking in the smell of her hair under the scent of hotel shampoo and admiring her hair as it glinted in the evening sun. Finally, she was all his, and he was all hers. There was a price, but it was the adventure he thought he could never have. And he had his Rose, his Goddess of time and space. What else could he ask for?
7. Savage Garden , "Promises" (3:31) Doctor/Rose, "Journey's End"
His world was spinning out from under him as he felt the regeneration beginning, and he looked into her eyes, those big, beautiful eyes. He couldn't believe it. He wasn't sure whether to be overjoyed or outraged or terrified for his life. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't be it. He felt the man he'd become at her kiss welling up within him and he fought it with everything he had. He wouldn't be like that, not again... Or could he? Settle down for a few years, live a normal life. He'd lose it all again, he always did but, how would it hurt more than being left behind, again and again...
But what would that do to her, regardless of how much she wanted it? What about Donna... what about Jack? And what about him, his faces, his last eight faces staring back at him in his mind's eye. The Master.. oh god, the Master. Who will he be? He'll be... he'll be hers. He starts the regeneration and directs it into his hand...
8. A.F.I., "Love Like Winter" (2:45) Jack/Rose/Nine, post-"The Parting of Ways"
The spotting was Edinburgh, and it was their case, so there they were. He wandered through the the streets, looking for aliens, but then he caught just a hint of something in the corner of his eye--a long forgotten building, rebuilt, pieces of what had been there before the blitz jumping out at him. It had been so long ago, so very long ago, but he could still remember, dancing under the moonlight on top of the ship, and her laugh, that lovely lap. And the Union Jack and what was under it. And the smell of her perfume, and the man she was with.
He shivered in the winter wind, wondering why he'd remember them in a place like this. He wishes he could see them both, just one more time... Show them what they made him become.
9. Suzumebachi, "The Ballad of Sir Kibbles ~ Theme of Dream Hunter" (3:15) Doctor and Donna, "Journey's End"
The looks at her, lying there, face blank, fighting back tears. She's so beautiful. His mind plays back over the things they've been through, the places they've been... places she won't remember. People she won't remember. The woman she won't remember being, because she's a part of him now.
But then he smiles. What Davros said was partly right--he changes all these people, even if they don't remember. Donna will dream, dream of diamonds on Midnight and making the right choices on Shan Shen, dream of fighting Sontarans and protecting Ood with the ferocity of a mother. She'll remember being a mother, even though she never was, and now that he thinks about it maybe he'll go back to that library and do another look for that guy...
And the dreams will dance in her head when she sleeps, the only time it's safe, the only time he won't be called out of her to burn her mind. Who knows? Maybe she'll do something with them. All the best literature came from dreams...
10. Freedom Call, "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" Sarah Jane and Luke, post-"Journey's End" (LOL MOAR FAIL)
She holds him tightly to her as she fights back tears. She can't cry, not in front of him. She has to be strong.
After all, it's all over right? The trial is over. The Daleks have been stopped and they've gone on their ways. But Sarah Jane can't shake the feeling that she'll never see the Doctor again, and as much as she told herself that was fine after all these years... she can't. His laugh, his smile, his happiness... he was cutting ties, cutting things off, again. An ending. And she was far too old to hope for another reunion at another school.
"Mum?" Luke asks. "Is something wrong."
"No, Luke," she lies, pulling away. "Just leftover tension after it all."
"It'll be okay, mum." He smiles at her. "Just let it out. Clyde says that sometimes, when people get really emotional, they just have to get it out of their system."
Sarha Jane hugs her son and cries.
