Chapter 3

Frantically Sungmin’s fingers pressed the elevator key, slipping inside he pressed the ground floor button, ignoring Hyoyeon’s call of protest. Hyperventilating he sank to the floor, grasping his chest as he fought the fear, anxiety and the heart break that had come rushing at him when he had seen the other’s face. Shaking slightly the elevator dinged, the heavy doors sliding open. Stumbling outside he gasped for air clutching at his heart he struggled, fighting the choking tears that fought at him.

“Min!” Kyuhyun exclaimed, grabbing the other’s arms roughly.

Yelling angrily at the contact Sungmin deftly threw the other over his shoulder, the harsh sound of flesh meeting concrete ringing in the air.

“Who the hell do you think you’re touching you bastard!” he screamed, stumbling away from him.

“Min, wait!” Kyuhyun coughed, setting up as he rubbed his head, fighting the wave of dizziness that threatened him. “Let’s talk!”

“I have nothing to say to you!” Sungmin shrieked, shrinking back.

“This isn’t about me and you!” Kyuhyun objected, rolling to his hands and feet, deciding that standing was a poor choice.

“I don’t give a shit who it’s about!” He cried, drawing in air shakily. “I have nothing to say to you nor will I ever!”

“Sungmin-”

“Min!” Hyoyeon’s voice cut across the parking lot, the sound of her heels clicking on the pavement as she ran. Huffing she stopped beside Kyuhyun, placing her hands on her knees while she caught her breath. “Wait.” She gasped. Jogging up beside her Eunhyuk rushed to his injured friend.

“Kyu, are you ok?” he asked worriedly.

“I’m fine.” He laughed bitterly, holding his head as the other forced him to stand. “Not anything that will kill me.”

“Unfortunately.” Sungmin ground darkly.

“Min,” Hyoyeon tried desperately.

Angrily his betrayed eyes landed on Hyoyeon who shrank back slightly. Shaking his head slightly a bitter laugh escaped his plump lips. “I can’t believe you did this to me Hyoyeon.”

“M-min,” she whispered, voice cracking. “I didn’t think-”

“I’m leaving.” He hissed angrily, wrapping his arms about him protectively. “I want to be alone.”

“B-”

“If anyone follows me I won’t hold back like I did just now.” He warned darkly, turning to leave, running from the scene.

Groaning Kyuhyun felt the back of his head, a nice whelp forming under his fingers.

“Well,” he laughed bitterly. “That went well I suppose.”

“He hates me now.” Hyoyeon whispered miserably tears misting her almond eyes.

“Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on?” Eunhyuk demanded gently helping his friend to his feet, keeping a firm hold on his arm to support him.

Blankly Hyoyeon looked towards Eunhyuk, her eyes radiating pain and uncertainty. Moaning softly Kyuhyun avoided his friends gaze.

“Well?” Eunhyuk ground, patience wearing thin.

Sighing heavily Hyoyeon met Kyuhyun’s gaze. Nodding Kyuhyun silently encouraged her. Inhaling softly Hyoyeon looked at her fiancé.

“Remember how we said we all went to school together and Kyuhyun said he might know Sungmin?” she asked softly.

“Yeah.” Eunhyuk demanded, looking between the two as they exchanged wary glances.

Inhaling Hyoyeon looked remorsefully where Sungmin had disappeared. “Well, we were all friends at one point.” She whispered softly. “Some of us,” she said softly, “Were more than just friends.”

“Wait!” Eunhyuk demanded, dropping Kyuhyun’s arm angrily, standing back to look at them. “You knew each other already and you didn’t tell me about it?”

“We were going to.” Kyuhyun supplied lamely.

“You were friends?” Eunhyuk demanded, eyes narrowed angrily, voice laced with hurt.

“We were,” Hyoyeon whispered. “Before Sungmin disappeared.”

“Wait,” Eunhyuk demanded, shaking his head in disbelief. “He disappeared?!”

“Yes.” She whispered softly.

“Why did he disappear?” Eunhyuk demanded, anger and confusion mingling.

“Because I broke his heart.” Kyuhyun supplied softly, remorseful eyes looking to where the other had stood. Awkwardly they stood, Kyuhyun’s eyes lost to where Sungmin had disappeared and Hyoyeon’s worriedly searching Eunhyuk’s unreadable mask.

“How long?” he ground softly, causing Kyuhyun to look at him curiously.

“How long for what?” Hyoyeon asked timidly.

“How long have you known each other?”

“Including these past few years, even though we never talked?” she whispered softly.

“Yes.” Eunhyuk ground.

“Ten years.” She whispered softly.

“And you acted like you had just met for the first time when I introduced you.” Eunhyuk scoffed angrily, stepping away from them. “Now I see why he was so angry.”

“Hyuk.” Hyoyeon tried tentatively.

“Not now Hyoyeon.” He ground. “I want to be alone.”

“But Hyuk-” she began hesitantly.

“Why don’t you stay here with my best friend?” he glared, ignoring Kyuhyun’s surprised look at his venomous voice. “Wait,” he scoffed bitterly, “Let me correct that. You’re best friend.”

“Hyuk-”

“I’ll call you.” Eunhyuk ground, “Here’s the key to the car. I’m taking a taxi.” Throwing the key at them he stomped off.

Watching him go Hyoyeon’s tears streamed down her face. “Hyuk wait!” she yelled scooping up the key as she chased after him.

Watching her go silently, Kyuhyun watched as she caught onto the other’s arm and was shook off angrily. Persistently she tried, flinching at something the other said. Exhaling softly Kyuhyun fished for his phone and keys heading towards his car; Shrugging mentally at the duo. They would work it out, if not they shouldn’t get married.

Scrolling through his contacts he quickly dialed a number, sighing heavily as he sank into the car seat. Hearing the other end pick up he quickly hung up, biting his lips as he leaned upon the steering wheel, Sungmin’s enraged and hurt face flashing through his mind. Breathing shakily he let the breath he had been holding loose. God he was beautiful. He hadn’t changed; not one bit. Shuddering he felt the tension he had felt at hearing the other’s voice release.

A small shiver racing up his spine as he felt the sorrow and pain course through him: Those eyes, those large, dark eyes. They could still leave him breathless, and that laugh still made his heart race. Nothing about him had changed. Everything was as vibrant and captivating as his haunting memories portrayed. The years had not changed him. Except for the hatred in his eyes, the cold and angry depth had replaced where fathomless love had once been. Wincing he felt his stomach churn knowing he was the cause for such hatred.

Inhaling shakily he redialed the number, waiting for his secretary to pick up.

“Kibum?” he asked softly.

“What is it Mr. Cho?” the other asked crossly. “It’s two in the morning and I am supposed to be on vacation.”

“I need you to tell me what hotel someone is staying in.” Kyuhyun said softly.

“Does it have to be right now?” he demanded gravelly.

“Please.” Kyuhyun asked softly, listening to the rustle of sheets and a soft ‘it’s nothing go back to sleep’ before the soft voice of the other came back across.

“Is everything alright?” Kibum asked worriedly.

“I-It’s fine.” Kyuhyun lied, realizing that he was actually shaking from the encounter. Clenching his hand he inhaled softly. “Sorry to call you so late.”

“Are you sure?” Kibum insisted, the soft clicking of a door heard over the line. “You rarely say please.”

“It,” Kyuhyun paused, weighing his answers. “I, I just need to find someone before Eunhyuk’s wedding.”

“Why?” Kibum asked.

“Can we just leave it at that for now?” He asked softly.

“It’s him, isn’t it?” the other asked breathlessly.

“Yeah.” Kyuhyun sighed pausing while his mind began to race. Shaking his head he inhaled regrettably. “Look it can wait till morning can’t it? Sorry I called you. I’ll call ag-”

“Lee Sungmin.” Kibum interrupted smoothly. “He is staying at one of our own. He rented a room at the Grand Hyatt. Suite number 432.”

“Thanks Kibum.” He breathed softly, smiling into the receiver.

“No problem.” The other responded. “Anything else before I go back to sleep?”

“Not that I know of.” Kyuhyun smiled slightly.

“Good,” Kibum replied frankly. “Oh and Kyuhyun.” He paused.

“Yes?”

“Don’t fuck it up again.” He replied coldly.

“I don’t know if there is anything left to fuck up.” He whispered, the other’s hate filled eyes flashing through his mind.

“Well figure it out.” Kibum deadpanned. “And one more thing.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t call me again. I’m on vacation.”

“Got it.” Kyuhyun chuckled, hanging up the phone, tossing it into the seat beside him. Sighing he slipped the key into the ignition hesitantly putting the car into reverse. Biting his lip he took a shaky breath before he slowly pulled onto the street heading for the Grand Hyatt.

Closing his eyes Sungmin leaned against the door, banishing the sting of tears from his eyes and nose. Inhaling shakily his hand clutched at his phone. Unbidden Kyuhyun’s face flashed through his mind mercilessly. Choking back a sob Sungmin felt his strength leave him. Shakily his legs gave way with his tears. Burring is head in his hands he let the sobs wrack his body, the tears rippling down his face. Inhaling raggedly he fought for breath, mind swirling with the images of the one man he had spent the last six years desperate to forget. Biting his lips he gripped his head, desperate to get rid of the image. Weeping he sank into the door, unable to rid the face that meshed with his memories. Curling into himself he hugged his knees, the sobs racking his ribcage mercilessly. Slowly the sobs subsided, exhaustion claiming his breath. Inhaling softly he caught the soft whiff of the others cologne, tears stinging his eyes once more.

“Why?” he whispered brokenly. “Why is he back?” Biting his plush lip he shook his head, banishing memories that had carefully been hidden. Whimpering softly the nights events flashed through his mind.

“How could Hyoyeon do this to me?” he whispered brokenly, hiccupping from lack of air. Gently the soft blue of the phone’s light bathed his face. Lolling to the side his swollen eyes looked at the vibration object, Hyoyeon’s number flashing on the id. Eyes narrowing at the smiling picture of the two while the phone played their song Sungmin felt anguish replaced with anger. Reaching out he felt the small object vibrate in his hand. Glaring at the object he slowly unfurled, bracing himself against the wall. Looking at the smiles the cheery music infuriated him, betrayal fresh in his heart. Crying out angrily he furiously threw the phone, ignoring the shattering sound as it connected to the wall. Hugging his knees to his chest defensively he rocked back and forth, the solidity of the door comforting him whilst the anger and pain slowly seeped from his body leaving him sore and aching.

Inhaling shakily he climbed to his feet, stumbling towards the shower, numbly peeling the clothes from his body he turned on the hot water. Automatically adjusting the temperature he shakily stepped into the shower, dissatisfied with the temperature he turned the water to scalding hot. Sinking down to the chilled tile that contrasted with the heat of the water he sank to the acrylic polymer base. Inhaling unsteadily through the steam and tears his head rested against the inlay, hot tears mingling with the steaming water, incomparable to the pain that tore at his heart. Closing his eyes he let the water consume him, determined to swallow the pain.

Sauntering into the lobby Kyuhyun caught the stunned eyes of the dozing bell boy as he hurried to look attentive. Resisting the urge to roll his eyes he coolly regarded the boy as he almost fell from his seat.

“Awake Minho?”

“Yes sir.” The other mumbled abashed. “W-what can I do for you?”

“I need to know the room number of a resident that is staying here.”

“I-isn’t that illegal?” Minho hedged carefully, eyeing the other.

“Not if you own the place.” Kyuhyun deadpanned neutral eyes looking the other up and down. “Can you look it up for me?”

“Is this some kind of  test?” Minho asked, eyes squinting carefully.

“No.” Kyuhyun replied coldly, “it’s a definite request.”

“Um,” Minho hummed uncertainty. “Is he a threat?”

Cursing Kyuhyun was for once irritated at himself for hiring semi-competent help. “No” he smiled civilly. “He is an old friend.”

“Then why don’t you know where he is?” Minho asked innocently.

Eyes narrowing Kyuhyun felt his patience waning. “Minho.” He warned softly.

“How can I look him up without a name?” Minho hurriedly asked, going to the computer.

“Lee.” Kyuhyun said thoughtfully, eyes wandering up the elegant stairs that were displayed in the lobby. “Lee Sungmin.”

“Has Mr. Lee roomed with us before?” Minho asked curiously, fingers gliding over the keyboard, frowning slightly.

“Not that I know of.” Kyuhyun replied shortly, fingers drumming on the counter. “Find it yet?”

“Sort of.” Minho replied, glancing uncertainly at his boss.

“What’s sort of?” Kyuhyun demanded irately.

“Are you sure this isn’t some kind of test?” he whispered softly.

“Minho.” Kyuhyun growled.

“It’s an honest question.” he deadpanned, looking directly at the other.

“No.” he bit, “It’s not a test. Now would you just give me the dam room number?”

“I’m sorry” he replied softly, surprising the other. “But I cant.”

“What do you mean you can’t?” he glared angrily.

“He specifically requested no visitors.”

“Fine.” Kyuhyun glared. “I’ll go there on my own anyway. I don’t need a key and I don’t even see why I bothered with the policy.” Spinning on his heel he headed towards the elevator.

“Um, Sir?” Minho began hesitantly.

“What?” Kyuhyun hissed irritably.

“We-uh-we won’t hesitate to throw anyone out that is disturbing our clients if they have done no wrong.”

“Yeah.” Kyuhyun acknowledged impatiently, eyes flitting towards the closing elevator. “I know, that’s my policy.”

“It includes you.” Minho said softly.

Eyes narrowing dangerously Kyuhyun tried to restrain his temper. “Try to throw me out and see what happens.”

“Try not to get thrown out.” Minho shot back eyes narrowing in response to the threat before his eyes widened in shock covering his mouth in astonishment at his own brazenness.

“You’re a little cheeky.” Kyuhyun glared.

Inhaling deeply Minho decided that he might as well stand his ground. Eyes leveling with the other’s he stood firm to his original statement.

“Your rules apply to you.” Minho insisted.

“I’ll be sure to have a word with you when I come back.” Kyuhyun replied coldly, sliding into the elevator as it prepared to leave. Aiming a well-placed glare at the other.

“Try not to get thrown out until I leave.” Minho mumbled darkly, throwing the pen down. Huffing irritably he fell into his chair, glaring at the metal doors.

Irritably Kyuhyun’s fingers drummed across his crossed arms, eyes narrowed irritably as he thought about the boy behind the desk. Why the hell did he choose to hire competent help again? Scoffing he dismissed the idea of him being thrown out of his own hotel. The cocky brat. As If he would allow that.

Jerking the elevator came to a halt and Kyuhyun felt his stomach plummet with the sudden jolt. Hands falling loosely to his side he felt his mouth grow dry as a clammy sweat broke across his body. Gradually the metal doors pulled back and Kyuhyun stared down the narrowing hallway, stomach clenching nervously. Slowly the metal doors began to close, slowly cutting off his view of the small hallway and lobby. Jolting he leapt forward, arm shooting out to block the closing doors. Jolting slightly the doors slowly began to retract, reopening to the narrowed path of his own destructive hell. Inhaling softly he slowly stepped onto the carpeted floor, eyes scanning the corridor. Hesitantly he stepped forward unsteadily, feet carrying him down the hall. Halting before the soft mahogany door he felt it loom before him, emphasizing how small and insignificant he was.

Hesitantly he reached for the knocker on the door, shriveling back before he could complete the action. Biting his lip nervously he danced on the balls of his feet, questioning himself. Looking up and down the hallway nervously he turned to look back at the large wooden barrier. Reaching up hesitantly he quickly rapped the door, heart accelerating uncontrollably. Nervously he looked about the hall, suddenly wondering if this had been such a bright idea. Cold sweat broke on his brow, his clenched hands clammy while his heart began to race wildly. The soft thud of feet beat in his ears as a person slowly approached. Casting about wildly he quickly grabbed a large vase of flowers to cover his face as he waited. Too afraid to run and too terrified to stay.
