Confused about all this shutdown nonsense? Worried about whether or not your tax refund won't get there until July? Lemme splain.
This is it in a nutshell: imagine a three ring circus:
1. The House of Representatives, led by Republican John Boehner, a whining, crying, raging alcoholic with the worst fake tan since Neil Sedaka
2. The Senate, led by Democrat Harry Reid, who is so unpopular in Nevada that he actually thought banning prostitution (the only thing in Nevada that generates income other than casinos) was a good idea
3. Barack Obama, who became President thinking he could change the world only to realize the only way to get things done is to compromise with people who want him and his entire family lynched
Boehner’s prime agenda is to ruin the Democratic Party and destroy Obama’s presidency. PERIOD. If it means destroying the economy and figuring out a way to blame Obama, so be it. So, in the midst of planning this country’s budget for the year, he basically is demanding that Obama and the Senate agree to cut funding Social Security, Obamacare, Planned Parenthood, and a bunch of other things the GOP doesn’t like in an effort to “reduce the deficit” (and pay for the GOP’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the tax cuts the GOP wants for their rich buddies). Otherwise, he will basically hold the entire budget for 2011 hostage, which means our government and lots of federal programs will get no funding. That means state parks will close, government employees will get furloughed, and all government programs except for the necessary ones will shut down due to lack of funding.
So basically it’s up to Harry Reid and Obama to try to come up with a compromise with this bastard and convince him to meet them halfway, which is how our government is supposed to be set up. Unfortunately, Obama and Reid are a pair of gelatin-spined cowards with nowhere near the courage and conviction of Bill Clinton (and they’re not bullies like most of the GOP) who tend to wimp out a lot more for the sake of trying to “get things done.”
In other words, to quote Lewis Black, our two party system is a bowl of shit looking in the mirror at itself.
Hope that helped.
