What is the Points System?
Just like in the books, the Points Sytem refers to the house points that are either rewarded or taken away from Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, based on student actions.
How it works:
Depending on what your character, and even what the player does, points can be taken away or rewarded to the house that the character represents. If you would like to check the current score of points for your house or others, please see Oblivi8's
user info.
How do you get points?
Character and player participation is a key point in
oblivi8. As seen in the post about
rules, your character must either post an entry, owl post, or roleplay log each week. Any additional entries (5 points), owl posts (5 points) or logs (10 points) will be rewarded points. Futhermore, there will be Dungeon Master posts as well as journal challenges from Dumbledore occasionally that will pose a challenge that will get you more points for your house, should you choose to do them. The amount of points given out will vary for these challenges.
Additionally, helping out the mods to ensure that the game runs smoothly as possible also merits points. This includes, but is not limited to, helping to promote
oblivi8, helping organize events and future plot lines, helping to come up with challenges, writing Daily Prophet articles or doing artwork/graphics for the community, and many other things.
Basically whatever you can do for the community would be awesome and we love you lots.
What exactly are the Dungeon Master posts and Dumbledore challenges? What can I expect from them?
DM POSTS
Dungeon Master posts are basically entries to
oblivi8 by
oblivi8or that describes an event happening in the school that your character can participate in if he or she wishes to. Most of them will be optional, though some will be mandatory at some point. The mandatory ones will not give you house points though, while optional ones may vary depending on how difficult the challenge is, how much you produce, etc.
Usually these posts will be made a week or so before the event actually happens, giving players time to play it out and post it. There will be a deadline for logs so that there won't be a lot of confusion (ie. a log posted a month after it's supposed to happen), though you can still post it afterwards if it's especially important for your character. You will not, however, get points for it. Here's an example of a DM post:
"A flood has happened in the dungeons on xxx day! Oh no! Where were you when it happened? Were you one of the Slytherins swept up in the flood? Did you help out to try and get everything back into order? Or were you eating popcorn and watching with amusement? Logs will be due by xxx day!"
In case of large events, such as a dance, there will be posts afterwards to compile and link to all the logs and summarize them for easy access. (ie. "The trio did blah blah, but then Snape and Draco with the buttsex! Blah blah! Will anything ever be the same again?")
DUMBLEDORE'S JOURNAL CHALLENGES
Dumbledore knows that sometimes life can be boring and you may not know what to write in your journals. Instead of shying away from them, he's given students a way to continue posting, while gaining points for your house at the same time! This challenge can be anything, really, from writing a song to somehow fitting the word nimblewimble into your post. (Obviously posts that consist of one line going, "Nimblewimble!" or, "What the hell is a nimblewimble?" do not count.) Here is an example of one of Dumbledore's challenges:
"Write about the flood that happened on xxx day. However, you may not use the words water or flood."
Points will vary depending on the challenge.
So how do you lose them?
If you disrespects the mods or your fellow players, not only will you get warnings sent to you, but we will deduce points off of your house. Likewise, if you forget to post one week, you will get a
punishment plus 5 points off. Also, see the question below.
My character is a prefect/professor, can I give or deduct points?
Yes, but within reason. This can happen in the journals or in a log, though not through owl post (that would be rather silly, don't you think?).
For example, if you were Ron or Snape and you found a student misbehaving, you could deduct points off if that was IC for your character. You can not deduct points off just because someone had a bad hair day, though you can tell them otherwise. It just won't count in the final decision. (ie. "Draco decided to threaten Harry by saying he would take fifty points off for no reason. Not that he could, but Harry didn't know that.")
If you are not a prefect or professor, you cannot take or give points. You can gain or lose them though.
So who's exactly making the decision for whether points count or not?
Coo aka Harry. Because she's crazy. She'll be checking up on the journals and communities daily to make sure that she gets every Point-related thing and keeps the record updated. She'll make sure to notify whoever is taking or giving points away so that they know their points have been taken care of. If she doesn't bug you, she may have missed it, so feel free to give her a little nudge so she's aware!
Any questions about the Points System should also be directed to her.
Great! But what am I getting out of this?
At the end of every month, the house that has the most points is rewarded a super special prize! We try to vary it each month.
My character's not in a house though! What about me?
You will more than likely be 'sorted' into a house lacking members or the house of your choice. This does not mean that you are in the house. It just means that any points you get will be given to that house.
I'm curious. Why did Gryffindor start off with negative seventy points though?
Harry Potter is a bad, bad boy. Please see chapter eight of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Snape Victorious).
I still have a few questions...
Comment and ask away! Your questions will be answered as soon as possible! Or when Coo's not feeling lazy.
