i assisted on the dumbest session of all time tonight. there were like 50965 engineers. and they all had too many opinions. and none of them were valid. at all.
shane is seriously the only engineer i've ever worked on who actually gets it, which is probably part of the reason i decided to focus on mixing rather than recording. i hate dealing with people who spend more time thinking about microphones than songs. they sit around and act like they're operating a fucking nuclear reactor. it's honestly not very hard to run a session. really. most of these kids have never recorded ANYTHING outside of Berklee, which is like the Disney Land of studios. they've never worked a real session, and they've never been the ones in front of the microphones.
i guess maybe i'm too stubborn. but when i mix i don't have to hear 17 opinions on how a kick drum should be compressed. i just fucking do it. and it sounds good. and that's it.
it's so frustrating to be in an environment where everything has to be passed through this informal committee of idiots who don't understand what's going on in the first place.
the poor musicians had to sit around for 45 minutes in the middle of a 4:00am session while the "producer" fumbled around with a drum sample that could have just been replaced at mixdown. but all these kids act like the musicians are working for them, and it couldn't be any more opposite from the truth.
okay, that's my rant. if you're still with me, here are a few things that might actually be remotely interesting:
last night:
i hung out with VA and it was super fun. she made me a lovely dinner, and then we went to bars. and i lost my wallet. and then found it. and we went to taryn's to watch creepy short films. and i got to pick out everyone who sucked in virginia's yearbook. and i drove her home. and i was happy.
today:
took cadogan on a long walk. took a nap. sold my old mixer to this super awkward guy from craigslist. got dinner with ben. took a nap. got coffee with shane. met these kids camping out in front of CompUSA to buy PS3s. apparently they're going to cost $600 in stores, but since they're in such high demand you can sell them on ebay for $1600 (?). then we went to the aforementioned clusterfuck of a recording session at berklee. and now i'm reading old LJ posts and listening to the postal service. dangerous combination.
goodnight moon.
