Releasing Steam

Hey there,

WOAH! OMG He's back! How? When? I don't understand!

I'm sorry for my lengthy absence, and I can't promise that it won't happen again, but I felt like ranting about a certain issue that I feel pretty strongly about and feel that this is probably the best place to do it on =). None of that stupid word limit crap lol.

SO, the issue that's really burning me up right now is the HUGE emphasis on 3D animation! Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful medium in it's own right and I don't have anything against it in the slightest. It's just the companies that create movies in 3D that should OBVIOUSLY be made in 2D. It's like 2D has grown this stigma over the last few years and is being steered clear of when it really shouldn't.

I need to give a few examples obviously to illustrate my point.

The Smurfs Movie

OK, the original Smurfs, if anybody remembers was in 2D, so it stands to reason that the movie, should reflect that does it not? WHY ARE THEY IN THE CITY!? The Smurfs live in the woods, reinventing them doesn't make sense to me, they're established in 2D and they would benefit from continuing in that fashion in my opinion.

Some of you might be thinking "well, yes, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be updated with the times right?" but, personally, I don't see why they can't be updated while remaining in a 2D format, the same goes for ALL of the kids movies that have been appropriated into 3D from 2 over the last few years, Garfield, Alvin and The Chipmunks, Yogi Bear, honestly, why must they ALL be 3D and ALL look terrible (in my opinion). Like I said, I have nothing against 3D work, I may prefer 2D personally, but I'm not adverse to watching a good pixar or Dreamworks film when they're made right. But a lot of studios (even Pixar and Dreamworks at times) lose a lot of the defining characteristics in their characters when they transition from 2D concept work to 3D rendering.

Recently I happened to have the pleasure of coming across this trailer for the new Winnie The Pooh movie:

Now THAT is how 2D should look, I know they've done it to resemble the original books but honestly, if you've seen the recent 3D kid's show you'd notice the decidedly superior quality of this picture.

I can't possibly emphasis how excited I was to see the Princess and the Frog released, Disney getting back to their roots and all. It really made me feel better about 2D animation in general since I've heard from SO many people that it's a dying art.

So yeah, that's my rant out of the way. Thanks for reading (if you did XD).

Cya next time!

P.S. Sorry for all of the warm sounding words, I'm actually boiling in my own skin with the actual weather and temperature in this room right now =P.

2d, animation, 3d
