So it started with looking at the Iceland lonely planet that I'd picked up from the library - I usually check the date on these things, but forgot. Turns out it's from 1997. It's amazing how much is different - no Euro (though I realise that is not an issue with Iceland, I was thinking of it with reference to Europe), minimal business web presence, and totally different pre-9/11 views of security! Plus, I probably used the same guide last time, in 1998.
Then I had a trainer night, and I'd picked out Sliding Doors because I remember Becky liking it. Holy cow if it wasn't a total late 90s relic already. It's amazing that enough has changed in 10 years that a movie can sound so quaint: "well, do you know if he has a mobile (i.e. cell phone)?" And no e-mailing to speak of. And it's not just the technology, but the mood that everything can be posh and nice and cool Brittania and pre-millenial. Also, I guess it's been long ago since the 90s to wonder how they might be nostalgically packaged - it feels like that started happening to the 1980s almost instantly. Maybe because the fashion/music circa 1983 was so distinctive? What is the sign of the 90s - jaded prosperity? Abundance tempered by irony? There's already a "children of the 90s" blog - I'm a teen of the 90s (turned 14 just 19 days into the decade) so only some of the stuff there made sense - I remember slap bracelets but they weren't part of life, ya know? And that blog's matra seemed to be "all hail Nickolodeon" and we didn't have cable :)
But yeah, I am probably more nostalgic for the first year or two out of college than for college itself, right there in 98/99 and such. What a crazy time, and I'm missing my friends - Oreo I get to see next week (YEAH!), C&H I'm too much of a bumbling freakazoid to actually get to talk with - it's been a while.
Anyway, a strange post to leave for England and Iceland with - yes, a reprise of the post-grad trip of 98... but the late 90s were such a trip, no? Everything changing all the time...
We had a great weekend of mtn biking (Great Brook, Horn Pond) and socializing (Redbones, dinner with C&H&M) and birds (Pileated Woodpeckers up close and x-rated! Herons! Towhee!) but you'll just have to trust me on that!
