I'm a huge fan of instrumental film scores. That shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who reads this journal. Lately, I've taken to exploring new composers. Well, perhaps "new" isn't the right word. I've gone back to names like Alfred Newman, Miklos Rozsa and Elmer Bernstein (okay, he can be considered contemporary, I'll give ya that). All three are known for their epic sound. In fact, all have in fact scored classic, epic productions, Newman with The Robe, its sequel Demetrius and the Gladiators, and The Egyptian among others, Rosza with Ben-Hur, El Cid, Julius Caesar and many others, and Bernstein with The Ten Commandments, The Buccaneer, The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven films and more. Together, their work spans from the 1920s to last month with the passing of Bernstein at 82.
I need to win the lottery so I can fill my library with their complete works.
