It's a Japanese thing. People are supposed to write down their wishes and then tie them to a tree so they can reach the gods.

The gods are supposed to read them on the tree and then make them come true! I think.

I'm kind of hoping to find a bamboo shoot. But, if that doesn't work out I'm just going to use one of the trees outside my house.
