Just got back from eating lunch. While at the restaurant, I overheard a Marine telling his friends about his time over in Fallujah and how he just got back a few months ago. I decided to pay for the guy's meal without telling him and had the waitress tell him thanks for serving his country.
As I walked out to my car the Marine came running out to thank me and give me a big hug. He was actually moved to tears by my kindness (plus he was a bit drunk I think). We spent the next 10-15 minutes talking in the parking lot, where he kept feeling the need to hug me and thank me for supporting the troops. He talked about how much it meant to him and his buddies to get letters from folks and to find people like me who still gave a damn about them fighting and dying over there.
As we parted company I felt very happy for having the chance to talk to him but also sad that he was so very grateful for me spending a few bucks to say thank you for fighting for our freedom. Too many people care more about Paris Hilton's jail sentence and Lyndsey Lohan's rehab relapses than they do about the men and women in our armed forces fighting overseas. It's a sad testament to America today, but thankfully there are still those who don the uniform to serve.
God bless our military.
