Vatican Blows It Again

After generating a little bit of good will with their planned conference on evolution, the Vatican went ahead and stood behind a bishop in Brazil, who has excommunicated the doctor who saved the life of a nine-year-old girl, by aborting the twins her molesting stepfather planted. The molester, of course, faces criminal charges, but not a single word of condemnation from the church.

It kinda seems that the church has lost grip on their priorities. I think they feel so pressed on the issue of abortion that, like anyone in a stressful situation, they seem to be making choices that aren't extremely well thought-out. For instance, preferring the unborn over the born. Once again, the church has positioned itself as an enemy of knowledge. So shortly after acknowledging that they had consistently blown it over 150 years in the case of Darwin. This time, it's the church against medical science.

And excommunication? Really? After recently lifting the excommunication of a Holocaust-denier? This is opposite to the message that they think they're sending. They think they're affirming life. But they would have wanted to force a nine year-old to deliver twins. That's a death-warrant.

To recap: antisemitism and denying the greatest genocidal rampage in history is ok, but saving the life of a molested nine year-old is an unforgivable sin.
