Evening boredom... can't sleep a trillion things so on my mind, so what did I do?

I reviewed Godsmack's new EP for absolutely no good reason.

Godsmack - The Other Side (Universal)

Nu-metal is dying, embers are all that remains from what was once a roaring bonfire, some bands see this and are changing with the times becoming more than the sum of their parts, becoming more than what everyone expected them to be, and even better they are surprising us all by producing albums that a deviation from what anything they have done before.

“The Other Side” is an all-acoustic EP brought to us by Boston’s Godsmack. Their recent album very much pushed the boundaries of what a “nu-metal” record is perceived to be, and it is almost a given that they haven’t showed us what they are capable of in terms of musicianship, don’t believe me? Take this album as an example of this phenomenon I speak of.

As I said the album is completely acoustic, which if you know anything about the band there is at least one ballad or otherwise mellow song on the album which is quite honestly usually my favorite, on their most recent album “Faceless” it was this incredible song “Serenity”, on their debut album it was “Voodoo”, it’s songs like those that allowed Godsmack to elevate themselves (in my humble) opinion, above most of their brethren. 90% of the reason for that feeling I have is of course Sully’s voice, which just has this tone to it that well for this kind of music you couldn’t find a better vocalist out there.

The song selection isn’t super surprising, songs like “Spiral” and “Re-align”, along with original works like “Touché” and “Running Blind”, topped off with an absolute kill rendition of “Keep Away” from their first album, and the re-titled “Awake” which is called “Asleep” for this album, it’s a great album from start to finish, it’s an experience and departure from the norm, and a definitely highlight in an already stellar career.
