Federal Election Commission's Interactive Campaign Finance Map

Aug 29, 2007 17:26

We hear about polls all the time, despite the fact that they're notoriously inaccurate at this stage, but aside from headlines about quarterly fundraising totals, the idea that folks vote with their dollars doesn't get much play in the national media. Curious about where the campaign's financial support is strongest, I consulted fec.gov's interactive map. Hover over the bubbles for state totals, or click them for more details. Cheer or jeer your state accordingly. Note that this map only covers funding through the second quarter, ending June 30, but compare the totals in these early states:

IOWA (Jan. 14)
Obama $69,055
Clinton $41,809

NEVADA (January 19)
Clinton: $395,730
Obama: $109,111

NEW HAMPSHIRE (January 22)
Obama: $123,146
Clinton: $ 71,225

SOUTH CAROLINA (January 29)
Obama: $201,385
Clinton: $ 77,114

So, while Nevada clearly needs work and this isn't scientific and yadda yadda, I think it's awesome. It's something to keep in mind when you hear about polls, "inevitability," and the supposedly all-powerful Clinton Fundraising Machine. It's also worth noting that we weren't that far behind Clinton in New York by the end of last quarter, despite the conventional wisdom that she has a lock on it. I'll be watching for them to post the August Quarterly report, which actually covers July and will give us a snapshot of how the third quarter is going. Plus, it will include my own wee contributions. :D The one to really watch for, though, is next quarter's total, which will include the Oprah Fundraising Machine. I hear she's expecting over a thousand people at her $4600-a-head fundraiser next month (although $2300 of each of those will be earmarked for the general election).
