WOW.
What a hella-long day.
I got to Carpenter Hall around eleven for Sunday canvassing, and Sean (I misspelled his name yesterday) had already left, so I was sent to a lady named Helen's house to meet up with her (because I wasn't about to go by myself), but within three seconds of speaking to me, she asked if I was wearing perfume. I was (Vanilla Fields), and she told me in no uncertain terms that she was severely allergic and she could wind up in the hospital, and she shut the door on me before I could even apologize. I didn't take it personally--I'd do the same thing if I were her.
So I went back to Carpenter Hall and made a few local GOTV calls, then the main guy there ("Begich Guy") sent me over to the main headquarters with many folders of stuff, and I stayed there, making calls to Iowa (some rude, some not so rude, mostly leaving messages on answering machines), and getting my grub on. There's been some great food at headquarters these last couple of weeks! I went home to chill out from the frustration of the calls--and to watch Rachel Maddow's Sunday special on MSNBC. It was awesome, as always, and the second half of the show was basically a blooper reel of the whole campaign season. (Well, as much as she could fit in. ^_^)
I'd woken up at three a.m. this morning, and was dead tired by the time Rachel was over, but I'd promised to go back, so I did, and since I didn't want to make calls, I was with a small group of people counting out door hanger sign...thingies... that say where that homeowner's polling place was for distribution tomorrow. Begich people were handing out Begich T-shirts to wear temporarily, because Mark Begich himself was coming to visit from Anchorage! And he came, and it was a pretty short visit, but it was nice, and I got some good pictures (and some bad pictures--hello, look at the person with the camera once in awhile!), which I'll post tomorrow, because I'm still dead tired--and we were supposed to do a photo op with him counting those door thingies with us, but he left and there was no photo op. Oh, well. He might be back tomorrow.
After that, I was pulled away by Molly to do data entry, but it was twenty minutes till eight so all the Obama people that were left made as many phone calls to Nevada as we could so we could get to 5,000 for the day (there were dozens of people at headquarters today--it was awesome! Especially for being Alaska!), and we made it! In fact I think we were about 30 over. Yay callers! And after that I did some data entry, and while I was doing that, Molly mentioned a friend of hers who's a manager at Barnes & Noble (because she knew from earlier conversations that I was trying to get work there), and said I should call her and mention Molly and go have coffee and talk about working at B&N, so I'm going to call that lady tomorrow morning. (I've never dropped a name nor gone for coffee to discuss prospective employment, but it's certainly worth a shot!) Also, the lady's boyfriend is a lawyer, and Molly mentioned that he needed paralegals, so who knows? I might get the hook-up for two jobs! (And totally get out of debt by the time Chris gets home from Iraq!) Or at least an internship as a paralegal--at this point in my "legal career," experience is worth more than pay, and since I'm being supported by my husband (that feels so un-feminist but as long as I don't take it for granted, I think I'll be okay) I might as well do any internships I can get!
Haha, one of the great things about spending all day volunteering for Obama is that I have something to write about in my LJ that's about me and my actual life, not just my obsession with my current fandom. :)
Also, I added a new Obama icon to my repertoire. If anyone knows who made it, please let me know so I can give him/her credit! Thanks!
(x-posted to my LJ. Also, apologies to the comm re: possible employment, but hey, JOBS BABY JOBS!)
