Obama finally left church?

May 31, 2008 15:15

I just heard on MSNBC that Barack just "resigned" from Trinity United Church of Christ. What do you guys think? I think it's pretty sad but if he felt it was the best thing to do...

I'm pissed off at the media for forcing this.

His church can't be scrutinized every single day and every single pastor and every single guest pastor even when he isn't there, just to make him look bad. I'm pretty sure it was a mutual thing because he doesn't want to subject him or the church to unwarranted scrutiny.

If he had to, he had to. It's sad, but Reverend Wright has been completely out of hand and has caused more damage than Hillary and McCain combined.

Also, when the family moves to the White House they're going to need to find a new church in DC anyway.

I was pissed w/Obama when he had to renounce Rev. Wright. It was the first time I was truly disappointed with him. But the press wasn't going to let this die. An American president just can't belong to a church where African-Americans stand tall, walk with pride and kiss nobody's ass.

There's a major, major difference between not kissing ass and accusing the government of creating AIDS to commit genocide.

I was only disappointed that Obama seemed to have erred in giving Wright the benefit of the doubt of not being just another fringe religious figure.

Oh no doubt. It's just a shame that certain views he has are of such an extremist, irrational nature. But then again, such is the state of affairs with (IMO) most religious figures.

Well one of my first reactions was that the family would need to find a new church in DC come next year anyway *grins*

But on a more serious note, I think it's sad that it has had to come to this and I can't imagine that this is a decision that he will have taken either easily or lightly. But a person's religion, as with their politics, is a very personal matter and I'm sure that if he thinks this is the best thing for him (and all concerned) then I'm sure it is.

I think this is one of those situations mind where he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Hopefully with everything else that is going on (the RBC meeting, the last three votes, the end of this whole process - hopefullly! - this will be something that dies away as an issue fairly quickly and quietly.
