I noticed that one of the LJ spotlight communities is a little community called thrifthorror. I've been going through the archives all afternoon.
This post made me laugh so much I almost peed. Especially the Pivot Pool part because I grew up in that era and I remember those parties and the falling asleep in the shag carpet under the furniture.
