Rec!view: Okay, let’s get something out of the way before I start yakking on about why you should read this fic. Kanda/Lavi? Leaves me cold. I mean Arctic. I’ve avoided fics featuring the pairing before because … well, I just don’t see it. I know that’s ridiculous for me to say, considering I’m guilty of making couples out of characters who have never even met in canon, but I always considered these two together as nonsensical. The chemistry between them never struck me as conducive to romance, hearts or any flowers but Kanda’s lilies (and those are REALLY not romantic). It’s a good thing, then, that this fic is anything BUT romantic. Instead, it’s an intensely plot-driven oeuvre that draws together sharp prose, insightful character study, witty dialogue and some of the most inventive story-twists I’ve ever seen in this type of change-canon-at-a-crucial-point-and-see-what-happens-in-the-alternate-version-of-events fanfic. It actually made me believe that there’s a way Lavi/Kanda could work, without sacrificing either of their personalities, and not just because they’re both pretty. One of the best things I’ve read recently in any fandom, and the best thing I’ve ever read for DGM.
