Now that Mulan is home, she must face a battle of a different kind.
Rec!view: How many times have I watched Mulan? How many times have I cooed over the gorgeous animation, the striking characters and the underlying issues it addresses? Disney fic is soooo difficult to get right if it’s going to push my buttons because most of the time the canon stands so well on its own (plus nine times out of ten Disney fic is written by children and those with he minds thereof). And yet … sometimes, despite all my expectations, I find a fic that gets it right. Seldear’s writing is just so damned sharp and beautiful that I fell in love with this fic instantly. It's the kind of fic that while I was reading it made me feel like all the air had been drawn out of my lungs and stored in a container half an inch away from my nose where I could see it but not get at it - and I liked it. Torture in a good way and with a good emotional payoff.
