Rec!view: I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a shipper, right? Well, for those not already in the know, I’m not. I don’t foam at the mouth when presented with certain pairings, I don’t have an OTP, and I certainly don’t go out of my way to bash ships others than those I consider ‘mine’. That said, I really wasn’t expecting to fall for Anzu/Seto as hard as I did, especially since it blindsided me, and it’s pretty much all down to this fic. I might go as far as to say that I consciously avoid shippy fic because it makes my fickle heart uncomfortable, but the further I got into this fic, the more I genuinely fell for these two as a couple. This is made so much easier by the fact that they’re so very in-character here, to the point where even I can suspend my disblief and believe Seto as more than the consummate Icy Bastard With Daddy Issues. One of the great things about this fic is that it's really so very, very Anzu and Seto, not just some random schmoopy couple. It makes no allowances; it just takes the characters as they are, with all their hang-ups and shortcomings, and shines a light behind them. It even reconciles the existing situation between Anzu and Yuugi, but it does so in a way that feels real and doesn’t leave me wanting more. These are the same characters as in canon, but more so. This fic made me adore them all over again, in all their last-dented-bean-tin-on-the-shelf splendour.
