I am being honest when I say this: it wasn't until I met you guys that I even noticed how short-changed Ron kept getting in the movies. I've always preferred the books over the movies - in my mind, I see Dan as Harry, Rupert as Ron, etc so when I read the books, I picture them, but the movies have always been something I loved slightly less than the books. I never noticed that he was made to come off as downright stupid sometimes and childish and a lot less nuanced.
Because I didn't really notice it in the first place, I don't feel like I can actually have an opinion on whether the director did better like you guys can, but for me, this movie finally made it extremely clear that there are THREE people who have taken on the task of beating Voldemort, not a Chosen One and his Genius Friend with the Funny Sidekick who tags along and is mostly useless.
The only thing I like better than an OTP is an OT3, and I liked how it was portrayed in this movie. The entire movie really rested on you seeing these kids being alone and scared and brave and clever and I think they really did pull it off.
Re: R/Hr. I knew from like book 2 that they were going to get together, and I don't even SHIP them. It's just like...that was always how it was supposed to be, you know? It didn't feel forced or too desperate or anything like that. It was like, "Finally."
I agree about the dance - I didn't get why the R/Hr shippers were pissed and the H/Hr shippers were like "OMG OUR PAIRING IS REAL~" (and srsly tumblr take the ship wars back to LJ). It was blatantly Harry trying to cheer her up and wanting to cheer himself up, too. They were probably the worst off they've ever been - Ron had left, they were completely alone, they had no idea WTF to do next, and they were honestly probably thinking they were going to end up dead soon. That moment was about them having a couple of minutes to not be tired and cold and scared and alone. STOP RUINING THE NICE THINGS WITH YOUR SHIP WARS.
I've always been impressed with Dan, because there were moments in the book where, if you looked at what Harry said and did on paper, he coud have come across as a spoiled, selfish immature child. Dan's always done a good job of balancing it for me so that he doesn't look like an emo teenager who needs a reality check. He always manages to convey the magnitude of what Harry has on his shoulders very well. And he's one of those actors who can pull off tiny little comedic moments that let you see that at heart he's the same kid who was so excited to get a letter at 11 telling him was special. Dan is my favorite, forever and always <3
I basically agree with everything you said about Emma. Her screaming, omg ;___; And she handled her storyline well, too - her upset over Ron leaving could have turned a touch too melodramatic and she played it just right.
You guys talking about it made me actually pay attention to Ron this time, and I said this already but for me, he's the one who's seemed like he's grown up the most. Maybe it was being given more to work with but he's all...a grown up now. He did a really fantastic job of making you understand that his reaction to everything was a combination of that horcrux and years and years of being throught of only as Harry's friend or another Weasley boy. Everyone overlooks Ron because he's not like Hermione who remembers everything she ever reads or Harry who's always been HARRY, but he's every bit as brave and important as they are. That hug when he came back. I was like :'D IRL. It's going to take all three of them to beat Voldemort, I'm glad the movie displayed that.
DOBBY ;___; I cried in the theater with my father and brother, that's how much that affected me.
The entire Ministry scene, THOSE ACTORS WERE SO FREAKING FABULOUS. I laughed so much I almost peed, negl.
I completely forgot about Dumbledore's funeral until someone pointed it out, and then I was completely baffled that they left it out. Like, what? You can't just LEAVE OUT DUMBLEDORE'S FUNERAL. I hope it's a deleted scene, at least. And really, I feel like...you HAVE to read the books. If you are going to watch the movies, you have to understand the books, because so much of the magic gets lost when it transfers onto the big screen, no matter how good the movie.
I have always been prickly when it comes to H/Hr vs R/Hr - I can't help it, it was ingrained in me when I first found the fandom 10 years ago - but good lord, people can be AWFUL about that stuff. So much smugness and general assholery everywhere, and I don't need more than small glimpses of it on my Tumblr dash to be turned off completely. I feel bad for those people, actually, that they're so focused on their "side" "winning" and they can't see the full gloriousness of the trio right in front of them. They were truly amazing, all three of them, and I'm so glad it finally happened - all of them on equal footing - even if it's 6 movies late. It's always been about the trio for me: their love and loyalty and so much goddamn courage.
Dan's always done a good job of balancing it for me so that he doesn't look like an emo teenager who needs a reality check.
YES OMG YES. I think it's easy to forget how awesome Dan is because he's always there, and he's always been pretty good, but it's so obvious that he loves the character so much, he has so much respect for everything that JKR has built, and he's carried all of that so gracefully. And beyond being a fantastic actor, he's an amazing person, too.
The wand-raising in HBP brought me to tears, but yeah, I do feel cheated that we never got Dumbledore's funeral. I guess they couldn't figure out how not to make it melodramatic? I can't imagine that they cut it out for time or whatever. D:
I can't imagine anyone being able to use the H/Hr dance as proof of that ship. I mean, it was incredibly affectionate and intimate and lovely but it was also very clearly a gesture of friendship and comfort, and their FACES at the end of it, oh man, how could you see those faces and not see how much the whole thing is really about missing Ron? LOOK AT THOSE FACES.
That has been so clearly written in the books, and I don't get why so many people don't see it. But that's just my bias as a shipper, I guess, and if others interpret it differently, go ahead. It's just annoying when people are assholes about it, on any "side".
I absolutely hate that the first six movies have made the trio so much like a lopsided love triangle, though. That Kloves has projected his own opinion so much on what was portrayed on screen, and has been so disrespectful (barring DH1) of canon.
The notion that the hero needs a love interest is a flaw of the books (oh, Ginny), and even more so of the movies. Hermione/Harry is so far off base it disturbs me. There doesn't need to be sexual tension in a male-female friendship and it just undermines both characters as they're written.
With the entire series so tight on Harry's POV, not once did I ever pick up that he loved Hermione as more than a friend or a sister. I never understood the auto-shipping between The Hero and The Female Character Closest To Him - back in the day, that was what most of the H/Hr shippers kept pointing out. Of course H/Hr had to happen, Harry is The Hero and Hermione is The Heroine, duh! *facepalm* I do enjoy their dynamic, but never ~that way~.
Seriously, with all the amazing Ron/Hermione moments and the unvarnished emotion on Ron's face every time he looked at her, how could anyone possibly be threatened by the Harry/Hermione dance? DID YOU MISS THE REST OF THE MOVIE?
Because I didn't really notice it in the first place, I don't feel like I can actually have an opinion on whether the director did better like you guys can, but for me, this movie finally made it extremely clear that there are THREE people who have taken on the task of beating Voldemort, not a Chosen One and his Genius Friend with the Funny Sidekick who tags along and is mostly useless.
