WHAT THEY LOST: His Keyblade. It's a link to the light, a good amount of his pride, and key to protecting those he cares about.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
From a young age, Riku thought he had it all figured out; and for the most part, he really did. He was a toddler, no older than four or five, when he first started training with Sora. Just playing sword-fight, really, but it meant so much more to him. He trained to get stronger, eventually telling Terra it was so that he could protect what was most important. This carried on throughout his life, first in his endeavors to protect Sora, and then Kairi. As the trio grew older, Riku was always the one with the idea, the one with the dream. He'd wanted to leave the islands and go to have adventures in other worlds before he'd even met Kairi. When they got older, and that dream got closer to becoming real, he was the one to take the initiative and got them to start building the raft that would obviously take them to a better life.
Or at least, a better one in his mind. At that point in his life, he had a tendency to think he was the best, and had the skills to prove it. He was the big man on the island, and the only one with hopes of catching up was Sora. Of course, competing with the kid made it easier to show off for Kairi, too, when they hit their teens.
His attitude started to change when the darkness began to warp him. Under Maleficent's wing, he learned to control the Heartless, and darkness tainted him. She made him think Sora no longer wanted him, and that he didn't care about Kairi anymore. It was up to Riku, who devoted himself entirely to the girl. Often, he would come and taunt Sora on his journey, even asking who was most important to the boy, perhaps wanting to be told he and Kairi still meant the most to him. Either way, he never let him answer, and continued on until he found Kairi, an empty shell without her heart. Over time, he became violently protective of the girl, trying harder and harder to push Sora out of his radar so that he could focus on the girl.
Eventually, this led to his being consumed by the darkness. Evil took over his body, suffocated him. Sora's light drove it back, but not for long. For the next several weeks, he fought against the darkness, trying to push it back before decided at the end of his trials to attempt to come to terms with it. He regretted what he'd done, both to his home and to his friend. He now knew full well what the line between right and wrong looked like; and he walked a careful path along it, trying as hard as he could not to step over into the darkness again. He decided to sacrifice whatever need be to bring Sora to the end of his journey and lead him home. This lead to his releasing of the darkness in him, and taking the form of Xehanort's Heartless. Bringing Roxas down in doing so, he was sure that he no longer had anything left to lose. He would give it all to right his friends' lives.
At that point, Riku no longer intended to return home. He had committed horrible deeds, and couldn't even bring himself to face Sora openly. He left him clues, gave him hints, and guided him to The World That Never Was. When this had been done, another, more pressing matter was brought to his attention: Kairi had been kidnapped. His old feelings rekindled, Riku sidetracked to hunt her down and set her free, which he did. He then took her to Sora, defending her as best as he could while not denying her own strengths. He knew full well that she was perfectly able to take care of herself, and so, he trusted her with a Keyblade, keeping a close eye on her as she fought to help Sora.
When Riku finally managed to reunite the two, he turned to leave, but was met with a very indignant Kairi who wouldn't let him go after so long. They were finally together, and she would rather bite her tongue and choke than see them fall apart. And so, she revealed Riku's identity to Sora, who immediately made it apparent that harbored no ill will toward his best friends for his past wrongdoings, and just wanted him to come home. Riku agreed to accompany him to the end of their journey, gaining back his own body in the process and proudly taking a stand to fight alongside Sora in the end. His best friend needed him, after all.
Once the battle was over, and the two were stranded alone, Riku admitted that he didn't know if he deserved to go back to the islands after what he'd done. But in the end, Sora and Kairi loved him anyway, and that was satisfying enough for him. He didn't have to be perfect, and he knew he was far from it, to the point that his imperfections were debilitating. But that was alright; the only opinions that mattered were Sora and Kairi's, and he knew he had their approval. They just wanted him back. And so, when the opportunity rose, he and Sora went home together, and as the islands accepted Riku back, he started on the road toward accepting himself.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
The halls were quiet, and so were the empty rooms of the castle. If one were to check each empty room from the day before, they would have found the only sounds were the ones they would make themselves... except, of course, for one room, in which there was a large, comfortable chair, occupied by a well-built teenage boy. In this room, the soft sound of quiet breathing could be heard as Riku slept, undisturbed by the shift in scenery thus far. Over time, the open window in the room allowed for the sound of rustling trees in the breeze to quietly hush into being. The change seemed to comfort the teenager for a moment, and he adjusted slightly, looking content to have been sleeping. But after a moment, his brow furrowed, and he started to stir. Something wasn't right.
Sea-foam eyes fluttered open, trying to focus on his bedroom around him. But those walls... that floor... That wasn't his room.
The realization came accompanied by a sharp pain in his chest that drove down into his stomach like an ice-cold metal spike. His blood ran cold, and he could feel the hair on his arms raise. His body went rigid, and he was fairly certain that he forgot how to breathe.
What was going on? Where was he?
All at once, his body resumed a panicked functioning. He bolted from the chair and to the window. That rushing sound... It wasn't the ocean. He'd thought it was, but it wasn't, it was--... trees. Hands planted firmly on the window sill, Riku stared out over the world he now found himself a part of. His fingers curled, slowly, as his mind raced. He didn't remember moving. He would have woken up if someone had kidnapped him... So why was he here, when he should have been at home with Sora and Kairi..?
Unless they had been taken from their home, as well.
Confusion twisted and warped his emotions, his lack of understanding both frustrating and frightening at the same time. Ever since finding Naminé, he had been so sure of his path. He had been set in his way, his plan laid out before him. The only thing that had changed that was the love of his friends that he hadn't quite expected to receive again. Their faith in him had changed everything, but they were the only ones with the power to derail his plans. The fact that he was lost with nothing to go on now was more than a little worrisome.
The silver-haired teen shoved away from the window, stalking to the door with a panic-fueled determination. He would find answers. Even if he had to force them out of someone. His thrust his hand to the side, just as he reached for the door, expecting the Way to Dawn to appear in his hand as it always did. When it didn't, his entire body froze, and he felt a numbness take him over. He looked down at his hand, and tried again and again to summon the weapon. It wouldn't appear to him.
For an unknown amount of time, Riku stared at his empty palm, fingers of his left hand still ghosting over the door's handle. How could this happen..? He had... He had conquered his darkness. Even if he hadn't gotten rid of it, he had gained control. He had gotten so far... Was it all for naught? The Keyblade... It was rejecting him now, wasn't it? That was the only way this could have occurred. He wasn't strong enough anymore. Or maybe he never was.
His hand slipped from the doorknob, and his knees hit the ground. Riku sat there, looking down at his hand as the frustration burrowed deep into him.
Maybe their faith was misplaced.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: It figures I'd get pulled away from home right after finally getting back. Guess I just wasn't meant to get a break yet...
If anyone can tell me where I can find a guy named Sora, or a girl named Kairi, let me know. They're friends of mine, and if they're here, I need to know as soon as possible. And, if no one's seen them, I'd appreciate if someone would point me to the exit. I have more important things to do than hang out here, sorry.
INTENT: To be honest, my first choices were taken already... I've been in this game... a lot. Just not in the last two years. Riku is someone I think I could play very well if I just gave myself a chance with him, but I wanted to play him in a game I was familiar with. Since I hear about Para just about all the time, I figured I couldn't stand being away much longer. I hope that I can grow as an RPer here, playing a character I adore in a setting I love.
