Actors on a Stage

Always liked actors, always have.

All my biases in other fandoms are actors (or at least I first came to know them through their work acting in something), so GD is somewhat of an anomaly.  Okay, he is very much of an anamoly.  (Let me digress from my point here for one long paragraph.)  See, I have a pattern of guys that I like, and GD almost flunks everyone of my criteria.  He smokes, he's younger than me, he's short, he's the younger brother in a family (all my other biases are, strangely, the eldest brother amont their siblings), he's attention-seeking (my previous biases being mostly middle-of-the-road).  OH AND HE IS NOT AN ACTOR.  How I wish he would be though, because I think he'd be marvelous.

Okay, the reason for this post is not to rant on how not perfect GD is,but how touched I was to read this interview with TOP in Vogue.

TOP seems to be really into the acting part of his career, and though I know this would steal time away from BB, I think he has loads of potential and should not give this up.  Also, the more I read about TOP, the more I am intrigued.  GD tends to lay his life out for all to see, he wears his emotions on his sleeve and (perhaps from being a celebrity since young) he understands the importance in letting the press know things.

TOP is different.  He is possibly the most fiercely private star in the big Korean boy groups, and his stigma against people seeing too much of him even extends to him not willing to do any kind of nudity.  When we see TOP on stage, it is always with charisma, but he refuses to let any details and history about himself slip.  I think that is precious.  There is value in protecting your own identity.

The reason why I ship TOP and GD, is because they have such magnetic personalities of their own.  They are like onions, so multi-layered and contradictory sometimes.  GD is totalitarianly perfectionist in the studio but loose and giggly at most other times.  TOP is just so weird and atypical.  With his looks, he could clearly do the bland "sexy thing", but he loves ice-cream and alcohol and just does whatever he wants most of the time.  I like that YG allows his artists to be full, blossoming people rather than pigeonhole them into a stereotype, like the cute maknae or the responsible leader, etc.

YB doesn't really know what to do with GD, with him, it is always gentle tolerance, like a mother.  But TOP fascinates GD, just like he fascinates us.  There is that magnetism there... I cannot explain it.

The point is, I was impressed with the way TOP presented himself in this interview, especially where he mentions that even TOP is an alter-ego for himself, it is a stage-name.  YG has always said that his artists have to be good people before they become good artists.  And the reason why he chose for Big Bang to promote through the interview series done by asiae, it is clear.  These boys give good interview.  They never feel obliged to say idol-ly things.  They just say what is on their hearts, and that is truly something extraordinary.  They don't need to rely on cute looks in variety shows, they have true strength in their spirit and their upbringing as men.

Music video of his acting in "71", a war movie about a pointless tragedy of a battle in the Korean war, wear high-school students gave up their lives for ideology that they don't really understand themselves.  This made me cry despite not understand one word of Korean.
