Author’s Note: Dedicated to
behindthec (Colin) because I promised I’d write something for him. This turned out more angsty and less cute. Damnit. Title taken from “Hush” by Automatic Loveletter. Beta'd by the ever so wonderful
medianoxlamia (i<3sarah). More under the cut!
They were at it again. The screaming echoed throughout the house. Ryan’s tall frame stood rigid and his fists clenched tightly. His eyes sparked, showing the intensity of his rage. Brendon stood his ground, his nose flaring, he was breathing hard as his heart drummed a wild beat against his chest. The instruments lay forgotten on the floor and their other two bandmates were nowhere to be found.
“I was only suggesting,” Brendon said through clenched teeth, trying his hardest to keep his voice even and calm.
“When I want you‘re help, I‘ll ask for it,” Ryan responded, equally hard and forced. After a minute of staring each other down, Ryan started walking out of the room, his eyes cold as he spoke to Brendon.
The fight seeped out of Brendon at those words, replaced with an unreasonably intense feeling of dejection, considering the frequency and simplicity of their fights. He shook his head at Ryan’s retreating form until it disappeared down the stairs of the cabin.
The tension was rising as each day passed by and the boys had to live up to the demands of everyone (the record label, the fans, and especially themselves). They were nowhere close to getting at least ten songs finished and the pressure was building. Four grown men having to spend time with each other took its toll and all four of them had different ways of letting out steam. Ryan and Brendon’s just happened to be a war of words, a screaming match. And usually Ryan would have the last word before ending it by stalking off somewhere.
Brendon sighed, hoping the hurt and anger would dissipate in one breath. It didn’t. He looked around the room where their numerous instruments were thrown haphazardly around the floor. He picked up each one gently and put it back in its rightful place, then grabbed his guitar, grabbed a bottle of beer on the way out, and walked all the way down to the dock.
He rolled up his pants and let his legs dangle on the edge of the wooden dock. He picked up his guitar, placed his hands on the strings and stared. Then instantly, his left hand positioned the fingers on that certain chord, and his right hand began to strum. From then his fingers guided him to an unknown melody, changing up from a slow melancholic tune to a fast angry one. His fingers channeling the rollercoaster of emotions coursing through his body. He let himself be immersed in the music, letting the sounds drown him in farther and farther away from the grips of reality.
He hadn’t noticed Ryan sitting beside him, watching him play. It wasn’t until his fingers started cramping that he sensed the other boy next to him. He put his guitar down, stared down at his lap as he started massaging his aching hands. But another pair of hands gently took his left hand away and a new set of fingers started rubbing. Brendon looked up but Ryan remained focus on his task. As if massaging the aching muscle would rub away the pain.
As time passed by, Ryan bumped his shoulder against Brendon’s. I’m sorry.
Brendon sighed and bumped back. I’m sorry too.
Then Ryan spread his fingers wider and carefully fused their hands together. The fingers laced perfectly to connect again what was broken. I love you. Ryan squeezed his hand for extra measure.
Brendon looked up and met Ryan’s eyes. They were calm but a flicker of anxiety passed through for a moment. Brendon lips slowly formed a smile, his eyes shining brightly against the darkening sky. I love you too.
Author's Note: This is the first fic I've written after...2? Almost 3 years? Yeah, kind of sad. My brain's been bombarding me with plot bunnies but my hands never really paid attention. =P I guess, I could thank Colin for bringing me out of my long, very long hiatus.
