in defense of psychiatry

I think you have to have some respect for psychiatrists.

sure, they might not have as much medical knowhow (they still need some, it's not all headtricks). sure, they can come across a bit odd. (hell, a certain consultant carries his chihuahua around).

But in their defense, they have to deal with shit.
They have to see all those people that the 'real' doctors would rather not see.
They need remarkable clarity of insight into how people work. It is not easy. It is too damn easy to fuck it all up.
They have to somehow deal with the shit in these people's lives and somehow sort it out. By far the most holistic frigging specialty I've seen so far.

Most of all -
They have to face every single day that question that most people try to shy away from or avoid. And somehow, they have to find some sort of answer to it.

Everything is subjective. Everything is in context. It's a story you want, not some checklist. You want a person, not a syndrome.
