I can't believe it has taken me so long to write this up! And I'm posting just as everyone is arriving at/leaving for Dragon*Con D:! But it must be posted today, for tomorrow I have to start the countdown to ULTIMATE MERLIN EXCITEMENT. So, without further ado...
AyaCon!
I had a fantastic time, fantastic! And I made so many lovely new friends! There were eleven of us in all and everyone made me feel so welcome, even though I only knew two of them to start with and the fact that I was nearly ten years older than most of them. Despite my
earlier panic, my anime knowledge was sufficient and there were lots of Zelda, Hetalia and Kuroshitsuji cosplayers, along with a few Eternal Sonata and Chevalier D'Eon ones :D. Even five or so other Gundam cosplayers (although only one from the same series as me). It was gloriously sunny all weekend, which was good and bad in equal measures (my second costume wasn't really ideal for the heat, although I pretty much refused to remove my mask!). The sun also provided me with much entertainment as I skipped around ogling my shadow "♥ ♥ OMG! It's Char Aznable! ♥ ♥" XD
Anyway, I was holding out for extra photos (omg, posing with Star Fox!) but they haven't materialized, so I shall post what I have to hand! Some of these photos I have shamelessly nabbed off facebook and flickr* (although I've tried to credit where possible). It's so frightening to think of all the pictures floating around the internet that I have no control over,
childings said she saw a picture on the terrifying site that is 4chan D: D: D:
So, on the Friday, I cosplayed Sheeta from Miyazaki's Laputa. I made the dress from an old duvet cover with help from my Mum. I thought it would be a comfy costume to go exploring in for the first day (when everything was exciting and new...and there was a likelihood of me getting lost!). I got recognised more than I thought I would and I got a few excited people running over and telling me that Laputa was their favourite film (I've loved it since I was tiny!), but I also got people saying "Oh! I love your Kiki costume!" ARGH! Worst case scenario. Not that I don't like Kiki, or that I think their costumes are completely dissimilar...but my costume would've been pretty shit had I been trying for her! Observe. Kiki is on the left, Sheeta is on the right.
And here I am in the middle... :D
I found this picture by
xahldera on Flickr and it's my absolute favourite.
I searched all over to find those brown pumps!
My friend Adam took this one, thank you Adam!
Is that the Knight Bus in the background?! :O
Oh, and here was the Levistone I made! You can see the unpainted version
here. People were really nice about it. I'd probably do a better job second time around, it could've done with sanding down and having more expensive enamel paint! It was OK being Sheeta, but really I was just waiting for the Saturday!
So, on Saturday I dressed as one of my all time favourite characters, Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. I was so excited whilst putting on my costume in the morning! The amusing thing was that we were in a normal hotel, rather than on-site accommodation and it was so funny seeing the other guests' faces as we came down to breakfast or piled into the taxi each morning XD! So, anyway, this is how I was dressed, although it was all accidentally feminised a little bit...no matter how determined I was to crossplay (my boobs refused to be bandaged down, I will master the technique for next time!)
I bought a Darth Vader helmet to customise, but just ran out of time, I also thought I'd probably melt under a wig, mask AND helmet! Char occasionally takes his helmet off, but he pretty much never removes his mask! So I went for just the mask. I'll make the helmet for next year.
None of the friends I went to the con with had watched Gundam, in fact, they asked who the ring master/band leader costume in the wardrobe belonged to! So, needless to say I was a little worried that no one else would recognise me, or ask me for photos, even though I thought he was a pretty iconic figure (I'm biased). Anyway, I stepped out of the taxi and got absolutely mobbed! It was so amazing, it felt like being famous! Although I think the best thing of all was that
Star Fox saluted me and said
Hail Zion (skip to 2:00)!
by Stafen Chau
This is the best picture I've found of my costume, I love it so much! The tunic and cape were bought online (and a little on the small side), although I added the shoulder boards and braid myself. I made the mask from foam and it took me forever to cut, glue and spray paint it. I couldn't see through it very well and it gave me double vision, but it was worth it! I even lost my friends at one point because my vision was so impaired.
I couldn't find a picture of Char's mask to share with you, but here's a clip from YouTube, which is way more exciting anyhow! Go watch Gundam everyone! Skip to 2.30 :D

I spent forever looking for an Amuro who I'd met on the forum (he's my arch rival in the show) but when I found him I had to dash off because one of my friends was crying outside and I'd only nipped back into the bar to tell everyone where we were! There is one picture, but it's not good enough to post. It was a funny sight though, he yelled 'CHAR!!!' when he spotted me, with such a smile on his face :D and asked for a hug when I left. Hahaha.Very out of character...or not, depending on your preference for fanfic. I'm really not into Char/Amuro.
I also found a Jerid Messa (well, rather, he found me...whilst he was dressed as Captain John Smith from Pocahontas. I was very confused) from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam which, for the uninitiated is kind've the sequel to the one that my character is from. Char is in Zeta, but wears a different costume and goes by a different name (Quattro Bajeena). In fact, someone cosplayed him too! So, Jerid had arranged a photoshoot on the Sunday, but his friend ended up forsaking his Quattro costume to be James from Team Rocket instead. Now, I have no problem with people dressing as James from Team Rocket, in fact I believe that every man in the world should probably dress as James from Team Rocket at some point, but it made my photos with Jerid rather awkward, as Quattro was the missing link between our costumes. Oh well.
I promise there will be much more Team Rocket later on!
I did find a photo of Quattro on the AyaCon Facebook group, so I will share it with you in a moment if only to amuse
childings, after some reference photos to illustrate how the seven year gap between Char becoming Quattro makes room for MAXIMUM GAYNESS. That outfit...I don't know.
No, wait...brace yourselves for the next one!
I...just...XD
He was a super nice guy :D
So here's another one of me and Jerid...out of character, seemingly! I WAS NOT NIPPLE TWEAKING! I was straightening my cape! Don't look at me like that! Also, oh my God, my legs are far too big to be Char ;__;
...I was pleasantly surprised when I found this picture of my bum though. Phew! I thought it would look so much worse in leggings!
How smug am I? Probably because I managed to fit all my hair under that wig. No mean feat. This was on the last day, it was so hot I had to have a break from my mask whilst no one was looking!
So, I should probably post a few pictures of my friends :)
Jimmie and Liz as Matt and Mello from Death Note.
Ollie as a Proxy from Ergo Proxy and Kayleigh as young Kakashi from Naruto. She was so awesome and so in character that she never took her mask off, only to eat and even then...
Haha!
Suz as Aeris from Final Fantasy VII. There were so many Final Fantasy characters...I've never played it D: D: D:
Adam, not in costume (I'm saving him for my Kuroshitsuji picspam further down the page!) but with Captain Bucky O'Hare. This picture makes me laugh so much. Just chillin'.
Kayleigh again as release form Grimmjow from Bleach
Seriously, Kayleigh and I were the only people hardcore enough to dress up every day ;)! Here she is again as Shiva from Final Fantasy. That wig was so amazing. She was being asked for photos the whole day! I felt really proud to be her (new) friend.
And now on to general cosplay pictures that I took, or didn't take! I'll start with loads of Zelda pictures, because I know there are quite a lot of fans on my flist.
These two were the first thing I saw as I stepped out of the taxi on the first day. OMG. Midna and Wolf Link from Twilight Princess.
I...just...amazing.
Just look at him! <3
This guy was so nice. He asked us what pose we'd like him to do! "Sword in or out?" Bless. He was very obliging!
Awesome.
Jim bet me that no one would dress as Tingle. Jim was wrong.
And now for some Full Metal Alchemist, which I have started watching! I'm really enjoying it.
xahldera These guys were just amazing. THEY DID A MAGIC SHOW, PEOPLE, A MAGIC SHOW! Yes, that's right, during the Sunday Night Live skits! It was so funny and cute, there's a video of it on YouTube, which I have included for your enjoyment! And here are a few pictures to tempt you to watch...

Now for Kuroshitsuji, honestly, all the costumes were stunning.
Photo by E. Bibby, stolen from Facebook group.
Look at the skeleton hand D: D: D:. The girl dressed as Doll (on the left) won an award for her costume.
Doll with a completely different set of Kuroshitsuji cosplayers!

Bento Dan photo by
Bento Dan I think I have a girlcrush on her. She looked amazing as Ciel. I am stalking her on Facebook now.
There were so many Sebastians, but I am choosing my friend Adam as my favourite, because he was the best.
Now, I know you've all been waiting for Team Rocket and there is such a tale to tell! They were the opening act for Sunday Night Live, an event which I had been warned about by my friends. The idea that anyone at all can get up and perform a short act does seem to be rather flawed XD. Anway, I sat back, not expecting much...when Team Rocket appeared!
"JESSIE!"
Seriously, look at Jessie's wig! It defies gravity!
"JAAAAMES!"
Here's a video of their act. BTW, it's in all the recommendations that you don't sing live because of technical issues and volume levels...

But the tale doesn't end there! After the acts finished, there was a charity auction. One of the items was a giant Pikachu. Team Rocket made such a commotion and everyone was laughing as James got up on the shoulders of his henchman to bid.
He didn't come down again for the whole bidding war. It was frantic! At one point, Team Boss Giovanni (who wasn't related to the group at all) was bidding against them, he was sat right in front of me XD!
As soon as Team Rocket started the bidding, the girls who were displaying Pikachu on stage made a quick exit and returned with this sign! Needless to say that Team Rocket were not to be thwarted in their plans (for once) and did actually capture Pikachu! There was mayhem on the stage!
Haha! So much action in one photo. I love how shocked the host of the auction looks (towards the right of the photo!)
A day of great joy for Team Rocket. They could've saved themselves a lot of heartache if they'd only forked out the £105 earlier on in the series ;). It was just such a magic moment!
And while we're on the subject of Pokémon, here are two MP3s for you!
♫
Team Rocket - Double Trouble♫
Nuclear Bubblewrap - Still Alive (Uranium Version) - this is so amazing, Jim made me a mix cd for the convention and this was on it. It's the song from Portal, but with a twist...
And speaking of music, another fantastic skit from Sunday Night Live was this song about murdering cat girls, it was brilliant, the words, the music!
fera_festiva I think you will like this too!

Not all the acts were this good, a few made me cringe. But everyone was so brave to get up there!
And now for some random cosplay snaps.
This scared the hell out of me. I have now learned that he is Excalibur from Soul Eater. I felt like he might eat my soul D:
...and here he is with some of the other characters. I've downloaded the anime just to see what the hell it's about!
Speaking of scary...
No Face from Spirited Away! As far as I know he was the only other Miyazaki character apart from me. Oh wait, no, there was a crossplayer doing Nausicaa in the Masquerade too!
Lisa Basil from Ace Attourney
Tom Servo from Mystery Science Theatre 3000
Bucky O'Hare and Star Fox! (Literally moments before the "Hail Zion" thing!)
Liz and I with Bowser.
Claves from Eternal Sonata. Unhappily my least favourite character from the game :(
England from Hetalia. There were lots of Englands actually, and a few Canadas and Americas. This was the first one I saw so I went chasing after her (and her unicorn) for a photo.
A Moogle. Again...more Final Fantasy stuff! Am I a bad person for not playing the games? D:
The inventively named "Dark Magician" from Yu-Gi-Oh! ;)
I have no idea. It was so hunched D: D: D:. Liz and I were very much afeared!
More Final Fantasy characters ;__;.
Honestly there are so many more photos, but I've been at this for weeks now! I really must post it!
If you're still with me, well done! Final bit, I promise!
Aside from the cosplay, we did go to a few panels and stuff. On the Friday we attended a Yaoi panel, which frightened the life out of me. It made me realise just how fluffy I like my slash to be. Shonen-ai all the way, baby...or...y'know, NOT ALL THE WAY, as the case may be. Some girls had brought in corn on the cob. CORN ON THE COB! And I saw a clip involving said corn! I was ignorant of this 'infamous' scene from Boku no Sexual Harassment, but everyone else seemed to know about it! I really wished that some of you guys could have been there too to hold my hand and tell me that everything would be ok. Honestly, I saw so much porn that day that I thought my eyes may need the morning-after-pill. There were giant fluffy rainbow penises and all kinds of things.
That night there was a gig by
Momoi Haruka which was amazing!

*I only chose this particular video because the sight of various objects like Sims diamonds and cat ears getting in the way of the camera really made me laugh.
On the Saturday we went to a Gothic Lolita catwalk show and after lots of people had asked really serious and obnoxious questions, Liz put her hand up just to ask where one of the dresses was from and it made me laugh. On the Sunday we also went to a really lovely demonstration about
Kanzashi, the hair ornaments worn by geisha. I was kind've fangirling the Kanzashi girl all weekend, because she looked so pretty at the Gothic Lolita event (and from what she said, I reckoned she was a similar age to me...when I was surrounded by nineteen year olds! A life line!), then her work with silk was just so beautiful (I hope she didn't see me slouching at the back, because my illnesses were really suffering from three nights without sleep and I couldn't stop fidgeting! I'm really sorry if you ever read this, which you might because we have a mutual friend in
forest_rose! I promise I was listening! D: D: D:)...and then she went and sang the 'Murdering Cat Girls' song with her equally wonderful-seeming boyfriend <3 < /gushing>
So yes, a fabulous time. I wish I could dress up every day! Thanks so much if you've made it to the end! And if you didn't then I forgive you because this was HUGE. I'm scared to post it now.
*If I've used a photo of yours and you would like to be credited, or would like it removed, please just let me know! No offence was meant, I failed to get some photos on the second day, due to mask impairment, so I've had to borrow some and I couldn't find credits for some.
