five years in iraq: retrospective

Mar 20, 2008 02:06

No War! This will be shouted along with many others on March, 19th.
Don't get me wrong I like a good old fashioned war protest.
I agree with the signs that read PEACE ON EARTH and FUCK BUSH.
War is bad, killing is bad, torture and the destruction of our economy is bad,
the list goes on.

As Hunter S. Thompson once wrote, "Buy the ticket. Take the ride."

So what is it that we are protesting? Is it the idea of war?
Is it against this horrendous administration?
We can all sit back and say,
"I told you so"
"No War"
but shit yo this mess of a war in Iraq was caused by us.
and the pullout method is not one hundred percent successful at preventing the death of more Iraqis.

The protest march might be good for morale amongst the smug and the punk
but we must all remember that we were never in control of this war
and we never will be.
We bought the ticket but we are riding a virtual coaster,
our seats moving harmlessly a foot above the ground,
our eyes fixed to a Television Scream
serving up the images of the American Dream.
So shout at the top of your lungs, at least that is real.
Try to feel the pain of the thousand upon thousands we never knew
and will never know.
Feel young again,
defiant and radiating fierce resentment
for the acts of our democratically elected Bush.
Relish in the thought of his funeral in ten months,
holding back the joyous laughter in a silent mourning church.

But none of that will change the fact that we are all now fucked for life.
