so it was the week before christmas...
we had half of an ep/demo cd recorded and i had
just bought a brand new mixing board and audio
card. so naturally the smartest thing to do would
be to have every single member of the ska band in
my basement at the same time, practicing, writing
material, and finishing up what is going to be our
first album. not to mention we had two shows coming
up one that night, and one two nights from then.
at the time, that would have been the biggest show
we had ever played. while starting with a brand new
drummer who had learned our material in a matter of
just a few days.
so we go to the first show, a shitty bar. a shitty show.
we fucked around in the parking lot, froze our asses,
ate a little, overall had a wonderful time. EXCEPT for
the fact that when it was our time to play, the only people
we were playing for was the people who ran the show, and a
few regulars @ the bar. it was very shitty indeed. we ended
up getting home at around 2 in the morning. we will never
play a bar show again unless we go on in the middle of the
band list and get paid.
we went back home, got some rest and had a few laughs,
what most people didnt realize is that we had only one day
to finish mixing, recording, mastering, and printing out
art work for our ep. i however stayed up till 6 the night before
our last day of recording to print out half of the art work
by myself. we recorded basically all day, and all night.
take after take after take after take, you'd think we were
really shitty or something (we were dont worry) but finally
we got the final takes and recorded everything, edited it, and
looked at the time....
it was at around 2 maybe 3 in the morning, and we still had to
package them label them, and finish printing the labels. so we got
maybe 3 or 4 computers going. burning cd after cd after cd. shelling
out 200 of these puppies for distribution writing messy things and
silly doodles to keep humor in all of this. we finally got to bed
at around 6 in the morning, only to wake up a few hours later. 6/8
of the band was sick, and i woke up to brad laying next to me with
a santa hat on... we all had bagels and brad threw up on my front
lawn. i surprisingly (though very very tired over not getting much
sleep at all) was in just perfect health condition.
we get there, we're one of the first bands to arrive with everything
we posses in our hands looking like dawn of the dead sept no blood
okey okey just replace the blood for vomit and everythings millhouse.
we ended up selling 46 of our 50 tickets and being that i knew jason
(of the high school football heroes) i got us on a friggin sweet spot.
it didnt matter anyway, becaues it was the first time erik had played
live on his fretless neck, brad was comatose, the horn section had a
fever, and the drummer didnt know what was going on because he couldnt
hear much to begin with. BUT we apparently impressed a lot of people.
making us look extreamly good looking, but not very good sounding. lol
so yea, that was the weekend of december 17th to december 19th. friends
who were there to share it, and friends who were there to not share it.
it was one of the greatest times of our lives. much dominos/taco bell/
wendy's/mc donalds/and possibly even KFC was digested and regurgitated
but i hold that one to the grave as a memory i will never forget.
