We left greece on wednesday after a pretty uneventful few days. after sunday night im not szyure i needed much more excitement really. i didnt get to do any sightseeing as i was working most the time but im sure i will go back to greece one day so i can sightsee then.
We left around lunchtime on wednesday to pretty calm conditions so we still kept working while underway. i got up to do nightwatch from 4-6am then got to sleep in til noon. we went through the corinthian canal outside of greece, i was convinced we were going to hit the sides its pretty narrow through there. then we all got up at 11.30pm the next night to see the stomboli volcano. it didnt do much at first so we were all waiting and tired, some people even gave up and went to bed. i was just about to go when it started erupting!!! as it was nighttime it totally lit up the sky. very impressive. apparently it blows up every 10-15mins and has been going non-stop for about 2000 years. yep, at times like these i love my job. we have also seen scores of dolphins following us. once we had about 20 young dolphins playing in our wake. so much better to see these creatures in the wild than at marineland where i went a couple of weeks ago. im still yet to see a whale but dont think ill find many of those in the med!
After the second night it started to get bumpy. we were running around the boat securing everything but the waves were just crazy. one of the jet skis that we kept in the bow broke its craddle. ive never seen waves crashing on the bridge windows like that before. we had at least 6-7ft of swell. not quite The Perfect Storm but it was enough to get our attention! so now we are anchored off Sardinia which is just stunning. its pretty calm so i think we will leave here just after lunch to continue on our way. we will have time to do some work coz we just found out the owners son is coming earlier than he planned now. we arrive in cannes on monday and he arrives on wednesday then the owners wife arrives on thursday and staying for about 6 weeks til the end of august.
today we are having a 4th of july bbq lunch woohoo hehe most of my previous boats have been english/european crew so its pretty cool having some americans onboard. they arent as bad as most people think well the ones i have met in my time have been pretty cool. we had a very 'thanksgiving-ish' dinner the other night of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce yum yum so i cant wait for our bbq today!
