The man slams the scared shop owner into the wall. “Bring me the money by Tuesday, unless you want to deal with my boss personally.”
“Is so much force necessary?”
He turned around and immediately bowed at Kibum who arrives, Kibum smiles. “I understand you’re excited about running your own route, but remember to keep your composure.” He says quietly with an assuring hand to the shoulder.
“Yes Hyung.”
“Go on,” Kibum assures the trio who go on their way.
“Thank you,” the shop owner said.
Kibum blinked and side-eyed the older man, ignoring his thanks as he leaves. As he walked through the neighborhood, there’s a sense of familiarity. He grew up there after all, and nearly every person recognized him in the tight-knitted place.
But when the gangs took over the city, they were finding danger when those that came through. And the police could only handle so much.
Behind the scenes, Kibum entered and grew in position and power, until he’s respected by the very men who drove them into fear. But Kibum continues to pretend it’s not in their favor.
Kibum turns another corner and looks up, only to come to a stop at the sight of a man pulling the metal gate down, closing his store for the night and placing the final locks.
When he sees the boutique owner, Kibum has a harder time pretending.
Sungmin tucks his sweater closer, shivering as the cold looms in and he stands up. He rubs his hands together. When he turns around, he froze, his eyes staying on the other but he turns back around and begins to walk ahead.
Sungmin felt a grip on his shoulder and he felt the cold surface of the metal gate on his back, Kibum cornered him from leaving.
“At least let me inside.”
Sungmin tensed, if any of his men were to see, they might just suspect he was being shook down for cash, for intimidation. Sungmin nodded and led him through the alley to the single door, Sungmin opened the three locks and felt nervous all the while, feeling Kibum’s eyes on him.
And when the two enter, Sungmin turns on the small lamp light as Kibum looks around the shop, seeing new clothes Sungmin now sold. He reached for a particular men’s jacket and reads the tag sewn in the collar, bearing Sungmin’s shop name.
“Your business is doing well?” Kibum asks.
“Not too bad,” Sungmin answered. “I have enough to pay them too.”
“If they interfere in your business, call me right away. I can’t always monitor their activities here.”
“Wouldn’t you be too busy?”
“Call me,” Kibum demands. “I don’t care whatever business they have me mixed up in, I’ll find a way out of it. Don’t worry.”
Sungmin lowers his eyes, it was difficult not to.
Kibum holds the jacket, “This is nicely done.”
Sungmin thanks him and Kibum smiled at the other clothing in his collection, “You were always talented in this regard.”
Sungmin’s silence is probably the only thing that nerves Kibum, even against the type of people he was with, nothing unsettles him more than the distance Sungmin continued putting between them in that small boutique.
With Sungmin’s back turned against him, Kibum felt more ashamed of what he was.
Breaking their silence was the sound of his cell, and Kibum sees the name and answers his boss. Sungmin turns around and observes Kibum who finishes the call.
“I’ll have to leave,” Kibum announces, returning the jacket to its spot.
“So soon?”
“Unfortunately.” Kibum muses, he smiles pleasantly and bids his goodbyes.
“Promise to call me too,” Sungmin interjects, “no matter how busy I am, I’ll answer.” He assures, looking at the other.
Kibum blinked at his proposition, but nods in agreement. He knows he should leave, but he can’t find the will to.
Sungmin then approaches him, and to Kibum’s surprise, Sungmin places the very jacket in his hands.
And when Sungmin kissed him, Kibum thought his heart would surely stop.
The kiss is too short when Sungmin pulls back, and the shop owner shyly lowers his head.
“You can have it,” Sungmin said.
“Bribing me now? You don’t have to do that to keep me on your good side,” Kibum smiles lightly.
Sungmin insists on him having it and murmurs quietly, “You always look cold out there.”
Kibum leaned in and kissed him once more, longer than their first to make up for lost time. They both weren’t sure when they could meet up again.
About the city, Kibum appears strong with his men in tow, giving his orders and demands. Sungmin sometimes spot him from a distance, and can’t help but notice Kibum still wearing his jacket.
Kibum happened to raise his eyes and gaze about the city aimlessly, until they find Sungmin just across.
Kibum gives a smile aimed to him, one so small and subtle that no one else notices. And the two both continue in opposite directions.
Kibum would let the others think as they want, assuming they owned him.
But like the tag sewn into his jacket, there was only one owner of his being, and when the circumstances changed, he’d boldly take his hand. It didn’t matter where to, as long as the other was safe and able to do as he pleased.
And for the man whose happiness depended on the shop owner’s every whim, he knew he’d be just as content.
Kibum tucked further into his jacket and looked up, and braves another cold night.
