Rejected... again. Would this pattern of not being able to go on at least one decent date finally break? Was she cursed? And if she was, who would dare do this to her?

Devi shook her head. She was being slightly over-dramatic again but it was becoming a hassle. In high school she didn’t bother dating because she knew those never lasted. But now that she attempted in college, where the percentage of it lasting was just a bit higher, she was failing horribly.

“Devi!” A voice sang, she turned around and looked at a panting Jayin.

“What do you want?” Devi asked bitterly, Jayin merely smiled.

]“Come with me, lets adopt cats!” Before Devi could reject, Jayin took her forearm and dragged her awkwardly through the sidewalks until they reached a small apartment. Jayin pushed her before him through the door and he immediately cried out in delight. Devi pursed her lips and crossed her arms, focusing her anger on the wall before her. “Look, Devi, they’re so cute!”

Devi looked from the corner of her eye and met face to face with a tiny black haired kitten. “It’s cute.” Devi admitted but closed her eyes. She felt something soft in her arms, she immediately opened them and looked at the kitten in her arms.

“If that adorable little kitty doesn’t make you smile, then you are one cold-hearted man.” Devi glared at him as he played with the kittens. Cooing at them and teasing their paws with his fingers. Devi adjusted her arms and held the kitten firmly in her hands.

“I can’t keep a cat, Devon’s allergic.” She muttered. “He’s such a weakling.” She watched the kitten blink its small eyes. “You... don’t you dare tempt me.”

A single meow convinced her, in the end the kitten roamed around the living room.

“Devon’s...going to kill me.” She shook her head. She placed her head on her palm as she leaned against the couch. She heard the door click open and recognized the two voices.

“I quit being your friend.” Devon stated. “Considering it’s a lot more tiring of a job than I imagined.”

"You know everything about me, so if we stop being friends I'll have to kill you because so help me... you are taking it to the grave." Kylan warned Devon who smiled in return. They both took off their shoes as they looked at Devi who gave a brief wave in return. She had no idea how was about to go about this, she widened her eyes as she noticed the kitten attempting to jump on the couch.

“Is that a cat?” Kylan asked, Devon turned around and widened his eyes. Before he could protest, Devi said. “I know, I know, you’re allergic to cats, but I think-”

“You’re allergic? But you never had a problem with Alex.” Devon gestured his hands but Devi caught on.

“Alex who?” Devi asked, slowly getting up.

“Alex, my cat.” Devon dropped his head.

“Then why did you tell everyone you were allergic?” Devi asked accusingly. Devon hid behind Kylan as Devi stepped dangerously close.

“I’m not allergic, I just never liked cats.” Devi narrowed her eyes at him, he backed up against the wall.

Devi bit her lips and gave one swift glare before picking up the kitten. “I’m keeping Hatvon, and you deal with it!” Devon slowly nodded as Devi carried Hatvon upstairs.

“Hatvon, what kind of name is that?” Kylan asked Devon who shrugged.

“Put E-D-E in the middle and see for yourself!” Devi yelled, Kylan thought it over and smiled as Devon sighed depressingly.

“Hate Devon... how appropriate.”

--

Devi sighed as she walked through campus beside Lyn. “You’re really depressed lately.” Lyn stated.

“Of course I am, I have no love life whatsoever and I’m in my prime years. Even someone like you has a boyfriend!” Lyn pouted. “I’m sorry... I’m just... Just Ignore me.”

Lyn giggled. “That can be done.” Devi huddled her sweater closer to her skin as a cold wind went past them.

“It hasn’t snowed yet, but I’m dreading it.”

“Why? You usually love snow.”

“Because there’s no one to walk through the snow with... You know how romantic that is! And I have no one to spend it with. And you’re so lucky, you have a boyfriend now to hold your hand through the snow! UGH! What is wrong with me?”

Lyn remained silent, Devi narrowed her eyes. “This is where you say ‘there’s nothing wrong with you at all, its just the guys fault.’” Lyn grinned. “I don’t like you.” Lyn laughed it off when she paused in her step. Devi looked up and watched as she recognized the two familiar idiots, at least that was her endearing term for the two. “I don’t think I’m that jealous of you actually, my cousin isn’t worth it.”

Lyn gave a wide smile. “He’s really nice, in his own way.” She finished as Devi gave her a skeptical look. “You were right though, he does take a longer time to really open up. I’m starting to see how frustrated everyone else is with me.”

“Yes... think of this as karma.” Lyn nodded. Devi sighed. “You know what you should do?” Lyn shook her head and waited. “You should go and get in between those two.”

“I’d rather not.”

“Lyn! If you don’t grow a backbone then nothing will ever progress for you! Go there and win your man back from his best friend!”

Lyn breathed in deeply as she took her advice into consideration. She looked up determined and nodded. “I’ll try.”

“Don’t try, do!” Devi shoved Lyn in front of her, nearly causing her to fall but she hoisted herself up. Lyn then walked towards the two, she groaned when Lyn simply stopped in her tracks. Too nervous to go on.

“That’s it!” Devi yelled out loud startling a few students around. She hurried forward past Lyn and grabbed Devon’s shoulder. “You idiot! Stop spending all your time with Kylan and balance it with Lyn too!” Devi then stared menacingly at Kylan and stabbed her finger against his chest. “You! Stop taking up all of Devon’s free time, you two spend so much time together even I’m questioning your orientation.”

Both remained speechless as Devi stomped off and gestured Lyn towards them. They smiled shyly as Lyn walked between them toward their next classes. Devi smiled triumphantly as she watched the trio walking further away, with Lyn consistently beside Devon.

She felt a pain within her chest as she watched Lyn go on, she recognized it immediately as jealously. Not jealously of Lyn’s success in romance, but of having her own friend slowly depending on someone else beside her.

Her smile faltered. She hated feeling vulnerable. She hated this gnawing feeling in her chest, a voice that crept up and reminded her what her true fear was. The fear of being left behind, of being left alone. Even nowadays, Riya wasn’t beside her as often, but wasn’t that her own fault? She placed her search for a potential boyfriend as precedent to anything else in her life. But she now found herself wanting only one thing, or two in that matter.

“Enough..” She breathed out and looked at the the vapor that formed in front of her. “It’s so cold.”

“I could warm you up, but I’d deem that inappropriate.”

Devi scowled. “Jayin, not now.”

“Aww, you’re so cruel!” Jayin sulked. “Do you like the kitten you adopted?”

“....Yes.” Devi admitted under her breath.

“Yay!” Jayin’s smile return to Devi’s annoyance. Before Devi could stalk off, she noted how uncomfortable Jayin seemed to be.

“What is it?” Devi asked harshly.

“Mm? Nothing.” Jayin gave a convincing grin. Devi turned when Jayin asked. “How’s Riya doing?”

“Fine.” Devi answered. “Why are you asking?”

“Just wondering.” Jayin shuffled his feet as he asked. “If you knew someone’s secret that could affect someone else, do you have a right to say anything?”

Devi furrowed her eyebrows. “No you don’t.” She replied. “That person must have his or her own reason for not telling someone directly, and shouldn’t be told by some third party. No matter how big that secret may be, especially if its told from someone like you."

Jayin, despite her bitter tone against me, grinned. “You’re right.” He waved as he walked off in the other direction. Leaving Devi to question his actions, Jayin then paused and turned around.

“REMEMBER TO FEED YOUR KITTEN!” Jayin yelled from the distance, everyone looked their way. Devi inwardly screamed.

“Idiot, everyone’s looking. Ahh, so embarrassing.” With that, she ran off.

--

Riya opened the door and watched a panting Devi burst through the door. “He’s not going to make it.”

“Then we’ll see what we can do-”

“Riya... its not worth the worry.” Lyn suddenly said as she followed behind Devi. “You scared me, I thought you had an actual life at stake.” She whined.

“I do, if you two don’t help me, this cat is not gonna make it.” Riya and Lyn both raised their eyebrows at the kitten before them.

“How cute.” Riya simply commented as she stroked the kitten’s ears.

“Extremely, now help. Having a kitten is completely beyond my capabilities.” Riya shook her head as she took the kitten into her arms and walked towards her kitchen. Devi watched as Riya with her usual air of elegance surrounding her, yet something was off.

“Something’s different about you.” Devi declared, Riya raised an eyebrow. “How can you still look beautiful while doing that... Just realized how long its been since I’ve last been in your house.” Devi glanced around.

“Too long.” Lyn agreed. Riya nodded as she prepared something for the kitten. The two didn’t pry anymore and simply watched as the kitten eased into licking from her dish.

“I’m more surprised you haven’t interrogated as to why I ignored you guys for a few weeks.” Riya said.

Devi shrugged. “What right do we have to ask you? Even best friends have a right to privacy. If you want to tell us, you will. If you think its not the right time then its not.” She reasoned.

“Even if its a life-altering secret, one that would affect us all.” Riya hinted.

Devi tilted her head. “Unless you’re talking about a guy who would potentially go for me, then no.” At that, both Lyn and Riya laughed.

“Even if someone like Jayin knows?”

Devi frowned. “Why would someone like him know before us?”

Riya sighed deeply. “He investigated me on his own, but I’m surprised he hasn’t said anything to you two.”

Lyn blinked a few times. “He would never betray your secret, no matter how much he may want to.”

Devi tsked. “It’s cause of that stupid guy I have Hatvon in the first place!” She banged her fists on the counter that startled the kitten.

“Hatvon?” Lyn asked, Devi waved it off, gesturing she explained later. Riya looked down, preparing herself as she asked.

“You’re sure you aren’t going to barge me with questions on what is going on exactly?”

Devi crossed her arms. “I’m not going to ask or beat it out of you. Unless you want me to.”

“I’ll consider that offer, in the meantime, shouldn’t you be off on some date?”

“Riya, even I know that’s unbelievable.” Riya chuckled at Lyn’s statement as Devi leered at the both of them.

“Just so you know, I can get a date anytime-”

“Sure you can.” Riya interrupted, Devi narrowed her eyes.

“I CAN! Just... ahhh, I try to be nice and you completely ruin it.”

“You can’t be nice Devi, its nothing like you.” Riya murmured. “At least you have Hatvon now, and he won’t ever run away from you, unlike all those guys.”

Devi pursed her lips. “You two never run either, no matter how annoying I may be. I’m quick-tempered, over dramatic and a complete jerk.”

“All the traits that we love about you.” Lyn said.

“I’m sure.”

“Well... if you were completely normal, I don’t think we’d exactly be friends, would we?” Riya said, watching the cat’s actions.

“We wouldn’t.”

“Normal is beneath us.” Lyn commented, Riya and Devi laughed.

“This is rare, not going to visit Devon?” Devi asked, Lyn shrugged. “Are you telling me that even after all I’ve done for the other day, you’re still having issues?”

“None at all, in fact, I think I understand him more now.” She smiled to herself. “And besides, its only been a few months since we’ve been dating. Those two have known each other for years, I can’t expect him to suddenly place me first.”

“He was with Kylan, wasn’t he?” Riya asked.

“That too.”  Lyn murmured as she patted her legs.

“Are those two still going at it? I’m going to finally teach my dear cousin a lesson.” Devi threatened, Riya smiled as she watched Lyn hold her hand back from dialing his number.

Riya watched in amusement and nodded to herself. “Let’s do something... that we wouldn’t usually do.” Devi and Lyn both turned around at Riya who rose up from her seat. “Suggest something. Now.”

Devi closed the phone and flipped her hair from her shoulders. “...It’s going to be Halloween in a few days, we should get a head start.” She smirked.

“Are you planning something illegal?” Lyn was sure the glint was being exchanged between the two.

“Mmm, may or may not be against the law. There may or may not be police involved.” Devi said light-heartedly.

“And if the police do come?” Lyn asked worriedly.

Devi pulled her up to her feet. “We’ll just have Riya smile at them, knock them off their feet and then run for our lives.” She locked eyes with Riya. “Are you okay with that plan?”

Riya simply smirked in response.

“Can I not be okay with the plan?” Lyn asked.

“I didn’t ask you.” Devi said. Lyn pouted.

“Just force yourself to be okay with it.” Riya told Lyn who sulked slightly as she followed them out of the house. Ready for the wild night they were planning, just the thoughts alone terrified Lyn. But there was one phrase that nearly caused Lyn a mini heart attack.

“How do guys feel about tattoos?”
