PCC Report + Photoshoots

My con report from Phoenix Comicon is up HERE! OK, it's not terribly exciting, but it chronicles my adventures at the con. It was a great con, save for some masquerade issues, but sadly I spent a lot of my time changing outfits in the hotel. xD Once again I volunteered myself for too many things ( Read more... )

Thank you! I would replace the wig in a heartbeat but that sword was just so much work. xD Though far from perfect, it's my first sword and it's my baby!

I used the foam and fiberglass method. What sword are you making? It's a good method for ridiculously large swords that you don't want to be heavy. (I can pose with it one handed!)

Copy/Pasted for the best explanation:

The sword was the biggest part of the project. I had never made a sword, so my friend Fuu helped me get the project started. First, I did the math to figure out how tall the sword should be in relation to my height. Then I enlarged and printed out a lifesize image of the sword to use as a pattern. It began as a PVC pipe base (I don't recommend this; use wood instead) with insulation foam over it to fill out the bulk of the blade. The foam was then sanded and carved into a rough shape. We used a cheap white foam lying in her garage, again I don't recommend it, because resin may eat it. So, I covered the whole blade in masking tape before covering it in fiberglass cloth and resin. After this were many bouts of filling (with wood filler, body filler, Paperclay...) and sanding until the surface was smooth. The detail on ( ... )

*looks it up* Yeah I think that would work. You could also do it out of wood, as it's not too huge and has a mainly flat shape, that is if you have stuff to work with wood. I don't have wood work stuff and wanted it light so I went this route. It did get expensive, because I kept buying more and more stuff, but my main expense was paint (went through so many paints) Fiberglass cloth isn't too expensive, I think it was between $5 and 10, maybe closer to 10 and it's gotten me through 2 projects and still have some! You need a lot of the fiberglass resin, though - a normal size can of that is like $16 but if you do it right xD it should get you through the project with some leftover. You'll also want the Bondo body filler to fill in any holes but I used the bf's so I don't know how much that was. So, it may be expensive to buy all this crap at once, but...it'll get you through multiple projects and be cost effective in the end, if that makes sense. xD ( ... )
