In my internet-meanderings I have discovered the following useful shaving-related facts, in increasing order of how well-verified by experiential reports they are:

I would recommend using conditioner instead of soap because it seems to me less drying (but this is legs vs. face here); I find a very light sheen of hair conditioner overall better than shaving cream or soap.

I have a general rule that where low-tech works as well as high-tech, the former is preferable.

I only shave using hot water. *shrugs* There's a difference, but it isn't really a huge difference. I shave in the shower anyway, using my free hand to feel for stray hairs rather than examining myself in the mirror, and I find that easier than doing it over the sink with or without shaving cream.

You're probably right: it wouldn't surprise me if relying on visual instead of tactile/somatosensory cues actually makes the process harder than it needs to be.

I have BIG problems with shaving, maybe because my facial hair is like barbed wire, maybe because I have sensitive skin, but probably both. I've read and experiemented with all sorts. No matter what you do, aparrently, is wrong. And my skin seems to think so too, because I always end up with horrendous shaving rash. Not straight away, but after about 2 days. and it's horrid. Then, when the beard grows back, it's AGONISINGLY itchy ( ... )
