From a footnote on p. 140 of Isaac Asimov's The World of Carbon (1958):
"The American Medical Association disapproves of the name 'ascorbic acid' because it mentions the disease against which the chemical can be used. They don't like to see anything encourage a patient to think he knows which drug is good for what disease and start dosing himself accordingly."
(Scorbus was the Latin name for scurvy.)
