I remember having my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was a little kid -- what I specifically remember most vividly is the subsequent 24 hours of unbearable postoperative pain, which to a five-year-old kid may as well be an eternity. What I don't remember at all is having more than a couple of throat infections prior to that, and I know that I had several after. I'm happy to say that was my one and only hospital stay ever; while I never really understood just why I was being made to go through such torture, being able to eat nothing but ice cream, popsicles and jello for two days helped take the edge off.
Turns out there really was no reason, according to van Staaij et al (
2004;
2005) and
Buskens et al (2007), who found that statistically the procedure offers practically no benefits and is unnecessary for the vast majority of children it's performed on. I'd have been better off with OJ and chicken soup, but then of course that doesn't make work for white collar professionals. Thanks, mom and dad. And especially thank you, Dr C*****n and everyone else involved, just in case the money you made off my pain wasn't thanks enough. You bloody c**ts.
