“Actually, I don’t have much questions but I’d be happy if you could tell me more about yourself. You always seem so reserved that I’m hopelessly trying to figure out what really happened to you,” Kyuhyun confesses. They’re walking at a slow pace but none of them mined it. It’s comfortable-they’re comfortable around each other.

“More about myself? I think you know pretty much everything about me…” Yesung trails off. His eyes are fixed on the road in front of them. Oblivious about the way his companion stares at him, he continues walking.

“Your past then. I want to know more about your past,” Kyuhyun answers.

“What about my past? Everybody has one,” Yesung teases but keep his voice in a monotone.

“Yah! You said you’d answer my questions! You should keep your word!” The taller male whines making his companion laugh. The former pouts when Yesung keeps on laughing causing them to stop in the middle of the street.

“Are you done laughing now?” Kyuhyun asks in annoyance.

“Yes, indeed I am. You were too cute back then with the pouting and the whining. So unlike you,” the smaller teased some more. Kyuhyun, obviously angry, walks away from the smaller male with wide strides. “Hey! Wait up! I’m sorry ok?”

Kyuhyun stops walking, yesung bumps into him and they both starts laughing. “Now we’re even. The story please?”

The smaller male glared at Kyuhyun who has a smug look on his face as he rubs his nose. “Fine. You win,” Yesung sighs dejectedly. “Where do I begin? Elementary?” he asks himself as they continue their journey to the convenient store.

“Hae-ah! Where are you going?” a ten year-old Yesung asked.

“Mommy said we’re going to the mall and they’re here to pick me up. Let’s play tomorrow?” Donghae patted his friend’s shoulder then turned away when he heard his name was called. “Bye!”

Yesung waved at his friend and started his journey back home. With a big bag on his bag, he walked the trail already familiar to his young mind. Since Donghae wasn’t with him, nobody else was there to keep him entertained so he resorted to humming. He was humming happily, skipped from time to time and half way home, he saw three boys. It made him stop on his tracks-eventually stopping everything he was doing, including breathing. He knew who those boys were. He knew them by heart and it made him shiver. They were his bullies and without Donghae with him, he knew he was dead.

Donghae wasn’t that much of a fighter but his tongue was sharp. One word from him and everyone would believe because he never lies. Yesung on the other hand, was known to be resilient and no matter how hurt he was, he wouldn’t say anything. Thus, making him the subject of bullying.

Yesung turned to run away but he was easily caught up by the boys bigger than him. He was pulled under the bridge and that was where they started circling him. The first blow was painful. The rest that followed didn’t hurt that much. He curled into a ball but his attackers wanted none of that. They had him up on his feet and the rest of the events passed by as a blur.

“Woah! That really happened to you?” Kyuhyun asks in genuine surprise.

“Yeah. My parents were in a business trip back then so they didn’t know what happened to me but hyung frantically searched for me. I was told that I was lifeless back then. They didn’t tell me the details though.” Yesung answers with a shrug.

“What happened next?”

“Hmmm… nothing really worth telling because after that Donghae never let me go home alone and blamed himself for what happened to me for four years. I was never bullied again until I was in Junior High but that was because I was an idiot back then.” Yesung shrugged at the memory and smiled bitterly.

“What happened?” Kyuhyun intrigued.

“I had several girlfriends all at the same time and they found out that I was playing with them. Their brothers beat me to a pulp. Me being the helpless little prick that I was back then, received everything they blew on me,” Yesung answers in a monotone as the memory passes by his mind.

“What a playboy. I’ve only ever had one girl friend yet you go and collect them?” Kyuhyun mocks with a smile on his face, unnoticed by his companion.

“Whatever jack ass,” Yesung retorted.

They reach the convenience store and grab everything without another word. They’re already queuing in front of the counter when Kyuhyun realize something.

“Hey, did you bring some money with you?” Kyuhyun asks earning a slight shake of the head from his companion. “Do you have your phone with you?” Again, the answer is a ‘no’ making the taller male heave out a sigh. “Let’s just get out of here. We just wasted our time.”

They leave the store with a scowl on their faces. The walk back was silent unlike before and it scares Yesung. He wonders if the taller male is angry at him or maybe he said something wrong back then. He tries to remember what it may be but nothing comes into his mind.

“Can we go seat on the swing first? I’m already tired,” Kyuhyun suggests. Yesung doesn’t utter a word and lets his companion lead the way. They sits down on the swing when a memory flashes on Yesung’s mind.

“I saw your bother crying here a few weeks ago and it has something to do with you,” Yesung starts.  “He was hurt by your actions but he kept it all to himself. I see that he’s happy now so I assume you’re treating him better?”

“I guess so. I mean, he’s a nice guy after all,” Kyuhyun mumbles-looking away to hide the blush on his face.

“No need to be shy. I won’t tell him,” the smaller male reassures.

Silence envelopes the two males. Creaking sounds from the swings and cicadas singing are the only distraction they have.

“I forgot to ask. What’s with your dominant fear? What happened to your house that made you scared of it?” Kyuhyun inquires though he bites his tongue when the smaller male stops all of his movement. He becomes alarmed of the sudden stiffness of his companion that he attempts to take back the question but the other beats him to it.

Yesung got home that stormy afternoon and found his house eerily quiet. He heard mumbling inside the kitchen which had it light open. Approaching the said door silently, he found it slightly ajar. He peeked inside and the scene horrified him. His father laid on the ground as blood gushed out his throat while his mother was on the dining table being pounded by a man. She wasn’t struggling and it was obvious she was drugged from the way her eyes looked. It was dull, lifeless.

He was frozen-frozen to where he stood. He watched his mother get handled by three unknown men inside their kitchen helplessly as tears cascaded down his face. A few grunts, dirty words, a slap and a moan came from the man who pounded his mother like a beast.

The man cleaned himself up as another one started with the horrific sight. Thunder rolled by at the same time as Yesung’s hiccups. He immediately cupped his mouth and tried to move his legs but they just wouldn’t cooperate. He wanted to help his mother but he couldn’t. Guilt rose from his insides and the next thing he knew, he hiccupped so loud the attackers turned their attention towards the door. Thunder rolled by again as his mother was brutally killed in front of his eyes.

Slowly and with pre-caution, one of the men approached the door. Yesung panicked and he knew that I he didn’t move, he would be rendered dead as well.

The man was now only a few feet away from him. Fortunately, that was when his body started to respond. He bolted away from the door, accidentally breaking a vase due to the lack of light alarming the assaulters about a witness.

Yesung ran. Not outsid, but towards his room and locked himself up on his closet. Thunder rolled again making the petite young man shiver. He heard footsteps and he knew any minute now, he would die. He prayed for a miracle, prayed that he’d be safe, prayed that he would come out of the house alive so he won’t leave his brother behind. Brother… Yesung’s eyes widened as realization hit him. It wasn’t too late yet. He reached for his phone on his pocket and speed dialed Heechul’s number who thankfully answered the phone immediately. He didn’t say a lot but one word was enough for his brother to come home in a speed of light.

Footsteps were heard and doors harshly opened were heard. He heard his opened and that made him shiver more. Lightning flashed followed by a loud roaring of thunder. Footsteps, slow and agonizing.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Louder and louder.

Thunder roared loudly outside.

Thump.

Thump.

A click.

A gulp.

Slowly, the closet door opened. Yesung held his breath and looked up to the man who had the young boy’s life at his mercy. Lightning flashed; the man with a smirk, Yesung with a horrified look and another man’s presence with a deadly look on his face.

The assaulter and the new comer both raised their guns. Yesung shivered even more when lightning flashed once more. Yesung closed his eyes as he anticipated his death. As the thunder boomed, a gunshot was heard followed by a heavy thump on the floor.

Yesung kept his eyes closed, assuming he died then and there. He kept his eyes closed though he heard his name being called. Begging him to come, pleading, crying.

“Jongwoon-ah… please. Please open your eyes. Please. I need to know that you’re alive. Please Jongwoon. Please…”

Yesung opened his eyes slowly, tears cascaded his face. He turned his attention towards the crying male and saw him opening his arms. Lightning flashed once more giving him the glimpse of his brother’s state. Traces of blood messed his brother’s face and his shirt, blood were flowing down his right shoulder. He was a crying mess-just like the younger was. When thunder boomed once more, Yesung threw himself on his brother’s arm and they cried together. The sound of rain, along with the constant booming of the thunder accompanied the Kim’s cries. Soon, sirens were heard followed by a series of footstep from a group of armed men.

“Took you long enough…” Heechul hissed as they were both taken to the ambulance to be treated.

Kyuhyun listens as Yesung cry. He doesn’t know what to say. The latter experienced something horrendous and it isn’t something easily forgotten. His experience is nothing compared to what his companion has gone through. He bets the guilt of not doing anything eats him up.

Yesung’s tears don’t stop falling though he wishes it to stop. He wants it to stop but his eyes don’t want to listen. He stiffens when an arm snakes its way around him-enveloping him in a gentle hug.

“It must’ve been hard on you. I’m here now so cry some more. Use my shoulders and cry. I promise I won’t let go,” Kyuhyun mumbles. The smaller male, upon hearing what his companion has said, cries louder and clings onto Kyuhyun’s shirt tightly. The latter caresses the former’s hair gently without a word.

After a few minutes, Yesung’s cries dies down. Hearing this, the taller male pulls away and stands up.

“Are you alright now?” Kyuhyun asks. The smaller male meekly nods his head. “I think it’s time we head back. Your brother is going to kill me for sure. Let’s go?”

Yesung stares at the hand offered to him by the taller male. He looks up to see Kyuhyun smiling at him-urging him to take the hand and he did. He takes the taller male’s hand and they walk back in a comfortable silence.

“It’s sad that they had to kill my turtles too. They were expensive too,” Yesung whines making Kyuhyun chuckle. Smiles linger on their faces as the heavy atmosphere was replaced by a lighter one. Kyuhyun starts humming a song and Yesung followed. Their walk home becomes much more interesting than earlier, Kyuhyun mused.
