Laughter
The thing he misses most when he’s in the Hamptons for the summer is her laughter. Not the crime scene investigations, suspect interrogations, or driving all around the city tracking down the bad guy-those he can live without for a couple months. It’s not hearing her laugh for weeks on end which seems wrong to him.
Beckett isn’t the type of woman who chuckles at every little comment made. She takes her job, and life, seriously. But when she does laugh it’s a beautiful thing. The way that her eyes light up and the easy smile that slides onto her lips…
Thinking about it some more, Castle can’t help but reconsider. Perhaps what he misses the most isn’t the sound of her laughter as much as being the one to make her laugh. Something inside of him just feels right whenever he can bring that hint of joviality into her day. Those moments are bright spots for him, and he can’t help but hope she feels the same way.
When they begin working together again in the fall, things are tense for a while. He knows he should have done some things differently, and he regrets those decisions more than Beckett will ever know. For a while he isn’t certain that things will, or even can go back to normal between them. He tries to ignore the pain that thought brings him.
Then, when he’s least expecting it, he hears her laugh. He doesn’t even really remember what it was that he did-something stupid, which he thinks might have involved trying to carry too many coffee mugs out of the break room at once. But it doesn’t matter what his exact actions were, because she’s there watching him. There’s a twinkle in her eyes and a smile on her lips as the melodious sound of amusement fades into the background. From somewhere deep within him, he can admit that it feels like he’s finally come home.
Suddenly he knows they’re going to be okay.
