Perfect Cure for the Birthday Blues
Rory’s still on the campaign trail when Lorelai’s birthday rolls around. Lorelai pretends it doesn’t bother her, but Luke knows better. He tries to make plans to take her out to dinner or for them to go away for the weekend, but she keeps coming up with excuses not to. First there’s a furniture delivery coming in to the Dragonfly and she’ll have to be there to sign for it, then there’s Paul Anka’s vet appointment, her car needs to be taken in for service, and the list goes on and on until Luke’s nearly certain there aren’t any excuses left in the book.
But it doesn’t matter; he is determined that she will not spend her entire birthday missing Rory.
The morning of her birthday he wakes up earlier than usual, slipping out of bed quietly so as not to wake Lorelai. He gets dressed in the dark and bites his tongue to keep the curse words from escaping when he stubs his toe on the dresser. He tiptoes down the stairs and heads to the diner. If he knows one thing about Lorelai it’s that junk food can make anything better.
Luke lets Ceasar take care of all the deliveries and he busies himself in the kitchen, baking up a storm. There are pies, donuts, cakes, cookies, taffy, caramel covered apples…She might die from a sugar overdose, but she sure as hell wasn’t going to not enjoy her birthday.
He makes it back to the house only a few minutes before he knows her alarm will go off. Madly he rushes into the kitchen and clears off the table, having a recollection of something from years past. Luke just finishes setting it up as he hears Lorelai coming down the stairs.
“Luke?” She calls out from the other room, her voice heavy with sleep. “Luke, is that you?”
“It’s me,” he says as he walks in to meet her in the living room.
She steps off the last stair to stand in front of him. “Not that I mind, but what are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be at the diner.”
He shakes his head. “Not right now.” And before Lorelai can protest he covers her eyes with one hand, grabs hold of her arm with the other and begins leading her towards the kitchen.
“Luke, what on-”
He cuts her off mid-protest, “Just hang on…” He stops walking when they’ve reached the kitchen table. Still keeping her eyes covered Luke positions them so that Lorelai is standing in front and they’re both facing the table. He then pulls his hand away so that she can see the ‘Happy Birthday Lorelai’ message he’s written on the table with cupcakes.
“I know it’s not Mallomars,” he says, “But I think you might like these better.”
Lorelai turns around slowly to face him, her eyes wide with surprise and a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “You did this?”
He smiles and nods. “Baked them this morning. Red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing. It’s one of your favourites, right?”
He thinks he sees tears in her eyes but before he can be sure she’s hugging him so tightly he can hardly breathe. “Thank you,” she whispers softly in his ear. Instantly he knows just how much this means to her and it’s more than he’d even imagined.
He wraps his arms around her fully and kisses her forehead. “Happy birthday,” he replies just as softly.
When Lorelai finally pulls away she’s grinning from ear to ear and quite frankly reminds him of the kids he sees go into Taylor’s candy store. “So these are all for me?” She asks, knowing the answer. She practically bounces as she grabs one from the table and starts peeling off the wrapper.
She takes a bite and lets out a sound that’s almost a moan. “Oh my god, Luke, these are amazing.”
“Well, don’t get too carried away here. There’s plenty more where those came from.”
She pauses with the cupcake halfway to her mouth, about to take a second bite. “More cupcakes?” She asks excitedly.
He shakes his head. “No. But there are two cakes-one chocolate and one vanilla because I didn’t know which you’d prefer, three pies, a batch of fresh donuts, peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter chocolate chip…”
He’s trying to remember what else he made when his list is interrupted by a kiss. He feels Lorelai’s arms wrap around him and when he looks down he sees her smiling up at him. All he feels is happiness-he’d do anything to see her smile.
“Did I ever tell you that I love you?” She asks.
He smiles. “Not today.” He presses his lips lightly against hers. “But I love you too.” He unwraps his arms from around the back of his neck. “Now enjoy your completely unhealthy breakfast. I have to get back to the diner and check to make sure Ceasar hasn’t burned it down.”
Lorelai takes a seat at the table, still smiling as she gets back to work on her cupcake.
“And come find me when you need another dose of sugar,” Luke says over his shoulder as he walks towards the door.
“You’re my hero, Luke Danes,” Lorelai calls back in an over-the-top sweet voice.
“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters as he closes the door behind him.
