“Barney, what happened?!” Lily cried out in alarm as he walked into MacLaren's soaking wet, leaving a trail of mud and water behind him as he made his way over to their usual table. His normally put together look was nowhere to be seen; he was a mess.
“It was…” He paused, his voice catching in his throat. “It was just horrible, Lily.”
“Oh no…” She said softly as she scooted over on the seat to make room for him. Both Marshall and Ted looked at them from across the table, curiosity on their faces. “Do you want to talk about it?” Lily asked.
He nodded slowly as a waitress delivered his usual drink to the table. He gave her a sad and pathetic looking smile in thanks.
“It’s okay, Barney, you can tell us,” Lily said sweetly.
“I was on my way over here, and I was…” He paused again. “I don’t know if I can say it.”
“Come on Barney, just spit it out,” Ted piped up.
Barney clenched his jaw. “I was attacked.”
The words were met with a chorus of surprise and shock.
“What do you mean you were attacked?” Lily asked.
“By who?” Marshall added.
“Are you okay?” Ted questioned.
“I may never get over it,” Barney said remorsefully. “It was awful.” He launched into his story, telling them how a group of tattooed bikers pulled up out of nowhere and threw him into the puddle on the side of the road. Then two of them held him down while the others used their muddy boots to stomp all over him. And he was about to wrap up his tale of this atrocious assault when Robin walked into the bar.
“Hey guys,” She said as she made her way over.
“Robin, you’ll never guess what happened to Barney, it’s awful,” Lily said as Robin pulled up a seat at the table.
“Uh, yeah I would, I saw it happen.”
“You saw him get attacked by a gang of bikers and you never stopped it?! Robin, how could you?!” Marshall asked, aghast.
Robin laughed. “What are you talking about, Marshall?”
Marshall pointed at Barney. “I am talking about what happened to this poor man, who was innocently minding his own business.”
“Yeah, so am I,” Robin said. “He got splashed by a passing cab. He was next to this huge muddy puddle and a cab sped by and he got soaked. I was across the street dropping something off in the mailbox-I saw the whole thing.”
The rest of the group turned to look at Barney, all signs of concern and caring disappearing from their faces.
“Why,” Robin asked, “What did he tell you happened?”
“Barney!” Ted, Marshall and Lily said in unison.
He shrugged his shoulders and dropped the act, returning to his normal calm appearance. “Well it was more exciting when I told it. Way to ruin it Robin.”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever. You guys in for some nachos? This girl is starving.”
