We Dooz It Large, Baby.

It's official. I have a new favorite show.

I haven't really watched a reality-based show since "Joe Millionaire 2" made its ignominious exit, but I am loving King of Cars, currently running Tuesday nights on A&E. It's about a car dealership in Las Vegas and the fascinating cast of characters who work there--including the owner, who produces the dealership's weekly infomercial show, has his own record company, and performs the "King of Cars" theme song himself. And the theme song is awesome. "We dooz it large, baby!" Who fucking talks like that? I love it.

I've always been fascinated by selling and salespeople. There's something that I find compelling about the whole thing: the tension and interplay between the seller and the person being sold to. Game versus game, you might say. Is my kung fu stronger than yours, or are you seriously going to convince me that I need a 2005 Land Rover at $800 a month?

In a strange way, I really admire salespeople. I wish I had the complete self-assurance that a salesperson needs. Sure, it makes them seem kind of weird and plastic, but it's also terribly attractive to me. I feel like they're...more alive, somehow, like they're really experiencing life in a way I never will. I used to telemarket, but that's not really the same thing and I hated doing it. There's no connection there, and you're intruding on their space.

Did you ever see Glengarry Glen Ross? I love that movie. I think it really sums up everything that fascinates me about salespeople. That movie, as well as the "King of Cars" show, really plays up the angle that selling is sort of a ritual of masculinity. Who's got the balls to pull off the next big deal, to be the man? It plays into my lifelong obsession with discovering the nature of masculinity. (P.S. If I ever discover same, I'll let you know.)

Anyhow, you should watch the show. Let me know what you think. Am I way out on this one? (Quite possibly.)
