Try as I might, I can't avoid the endless news coverage on Hurricane Katrina. It's really beginning to freak me out. Here I've barely stopped having near-nightly panic attacks about the possibility that Hunter might stop breathing in his sleep, and along comes this to fuel more nightmares ( Read more... )

I've never been to New Orleans (and I've heard mixed things), but what's happened is tragic, and I think we can only hope and pray for the best. The city won't ever be the same as the one you remember; there's a lot of significant damage and a lot more significant deaths; but life will go on, and they will rebuild, though it may takes months or years to do so.

I think it'll take more than a hurricane to erase beignets and chicory coffee.

Most of all, I remember feeling at home there because the ever-present smell of brackish water was very like that of my native San Antonio. That's what really gets me, remembering that smell, knowing now that it was the smell of the death of the city I fell in love with so long ago.

What a beautiful, and powerful, and heartbreaking pair of sentences. I know exactly what you mean.

But Cafe Du Monde will reopen: I don't doubt that for a moment. The spirit of New Orleans is too indomitable to be quenched forever.
