I used to visit Yorkshire a lot in my imagination, based on books, film and TV. Yes, the inevitable All Creatures Great and Small (both the books and TV), and a slightly strange attraction to the concept of the Bronte family of Haworth (not really an obsession, more a compelling romanticised interest). Sparked an interest to visit the moors, all that did, and I had hardwired in my brain it would be rain, mist, and grey skies with extraordinarily green rolling hills with granite-coloured dry-stone walls.
I visited the place in 1997, and while fantastic it was in blazing hot sunshine! Hm.
This last week I had the opportunity to be around the Haworth area again. It's winter (though the temperatures weren't typical winter!), and higher than average rainfall. Yes, it made it all mucky and murky, but it strangely reassured me all was right with the world... and I was able to reassure the locals I spoke with that I had in fact seen the place in blazing hot sunshine so I knew what the beauty of the place was :-)
And they make really nice roast beef and mustard rolls. Hmmmm.
