My new favorite thing, courtesy of Horrorbles and morehustle for tipping me off....the monthly Friday-night horror double feature at the historic Portage Theater. This is also the theater that is home to the Silent Film Society of Chicago. It seems like for the last couple of summers, I've really wanted to attend the Silent Summer Film Festival, but I got tied up with other things and let it fall by the wayside. Now I'm a little mad at myself. This theater is huge and gorgeous! I will definitely check it out this summer.

They also rent it out for parties at what seems like a really reasonable price, which led horty_pie and I to some fantasy-fueled discussions about a joint birthday party featuring some weirdo movies like "The Holy Mountain" and the Cremaster series. That would definitely be the best thing ever, if our budget would allow.

Last night's program consisted of the great "Abominable Dr. Phibes" and its mildly entertaining sequel, "Dr. Phibes Rises Again." I saw the first Dr. Phibes movie several years ago with my dad, but about the only thing I really remembered was that people died in interesting and creative ways, including someone getting stabbed through by a unicorn horn at one point. I forgot the murders being based on Biblical plagues and a lot of the wonderful details that really make the movie, like the mechanical band and Vincent Price's voice concoction.

Last night there was also a charity-based raffle, and though I crossed my fingers to win a Svengoolie-signed rubber chicken, I only won a "Food of the Gods" poster, and morehustle ended up being the biggest winner with a signed copy of the Chicago TV Horror Movie Shows book Jason got me for Christmas and two tickets to next month's screening. Still, I'm so glad I have this to look forward to every month now.
