Isabel looked at the infant with a frown.  “Nahh. Don’ wan’ it.”  She shook her head at her mother.  “Take back baby.”

Millie laughed, holding her infant nephew in her arms.  “We can’t take him back.  He’s your cousin, you goof.”

Shaking her head, Isabel reached out a hand and put it on the baby’s face, trying to see what the fuss was about.  “Don’ wan’,” she shook her head.  “Daisy-Maw-cus-Cwis-cousins.  Not baby.”

Her mother pried the two-year old’s hand from the baby’s face.  “Be nice, Isabel.  You have to be nice to him like you are to Baby Ellie.”

“I do be nice,” Isabel said with a frown.  “I nice fo’ Baby Ellie.”

“Yes, so be nice to this baby.  He’s your cousin, Baby Gabriel.  Can you say Gabriel?”

Isabel blinked, thinking about it.  “Baby Gabe-row.”

“Close enough,” Pedra, Millie’s sister-in-law, said with a smile, sitting down beside them.

“Anniepeda,” Isabel patted her aunt, saying “Auntie Pedra” as one word.  “You take back baby?”

Pedra shook her head. “He’s our baby - mine and Uncle David’s.  Like your mami and daddy have you.  We have Gabriel.”

“My mami,” Isabel eyed her mother holding the baby again.  “My daddy.”  She looked over at where Mike stood, talking with her uncle Ray.

“That’s right,” Pedra picked Isabel up and sat her in her lap.  “And you’re their baby, right?”

Isabel nodded.  “Yah, I Mami an’ Daddy baby.”

“Gabriel’s my baby.  And Uncle David’s baby,” Pedra tried to explain.

Wriggling from Pedra’s lap, Isabel pushed over next to Millie again.  “Mammmi,” she whined.  “I sit wid you.”

Millie sighed.  “You are sitting with me.”

“NO.”  Isabel scowled.  “I SIT.”  She pushed at Millie’s lap, trying to move the baby.

“Isabel!” Millie exclaimed.  “Stop it.”

“No, I don’t stop,” Isabel started to fuss, shades of an oncoming tantrum in her tone.

“Argh,” Millie made a face and held Gabriel out to Pedra so she could take him back.  “Sorry.  She’s really into this testing boundaries phase.”

Pedra took her son back with a laugh.  “It’s okay.”

Triumphantly, Isabel climbed into Millie’s lap.  “My Mami,” she said, scooting close to her.

“Yeah, yeah,” Millie held her daughter.  She glanced over at Pedra, who was looking down at Gabriel, her face content.  Millie actually smirked at the moment of peace and quiet her sister-in-law and nephew were having.  “Enjoy it while it lasts.”
