D'oh! - an RP Moment

Millie leaned over the kitchen counter, cutting a ham and cheese sandwich into squares, but leaving the crusts on. As she piled the pieces onto a plastic plate that boasted a picture of Dora the Explorer, Isabel toddled into the kitchen.

"Spun-Bah Scare-pans, Spun-Bah Scare-pans," the nearly-two year old said in a singsong voice.

Millie raised a brow, turning to her daughter. "Huh?"

Isabel grinned. "Spun-Bah, Mami." She sang again, "Spun-Bah Scare-pans!"

...the kid was seriously getting weirder by the day, Millie thought as she took the plate, along with one of Isabel's juiceboxes, into the living room. "Come on. You can eat out here with Mami," she said.

As Millie set the food on the coffee table, she realized, thanks to the blaring cartoon on the television, what Isabel had been saying. On the screen, Sponge-Bob Squarepants was annoyingly shrieking about something or other to a--was that a starfish? The artwork was so...loud...that it was hard to tell. She squinted at the TV in mild annoyance and then looked back at Isa, who was transfixed.

"Oh, no. No, no, no," Millie took the remote control and flipped the TV off. She'd been letting her watch too much television while Mike was recovering and it showed.

Isabel shrieked. "SPUN-BAH."
"No Sponge-Bob. You're not even supposed to watch that show. If your daddy weren't on pain meds, he'd be out here beating the TV with his crutch."

The little girl fussed. "Spun-Bah!"
"Sponge-bad," Millie corrected. "Sponge-Bob isn't educational. You're lucky you get to watch Dora. Now come eat your lunch."

Isabel climbed onto the couch, brows still knit. "TV." She pointed to the box.

"Yes, that's a TV and you've watched too much." Millie said.
"TV! TV!" She chanted.

After a minute of this, Millie finally sighed and flipped on the TV. Some days, especially lately, it was just easier not to argue. "All right, but no you-know-what."

Biting into a sandwich square, Isabel looked at the television like she'd won some sort of prize.

Millie flipped through, trying to find more suitable cartoons. The only thing she found was The Simpsons. Maybe not educational but certainly far superior in animation and in humor than the damn sponge-thing.

She got up and went to the kitchen to fix her own food. When she returned, Isabel looked up at her, innocently. "Ea' my shors, Mami."
