Tech woes, old and new

So I haven't been here in over a year because I couldn't log in on my old computer. Well she up and died on me a couple of months ago, just wouldn't boot up in the morning, devastating. I was in such a state for weeks, I tried everything, I feared the worst - my hard drive and everything on it was gone but I suspected that was not the case and the motherboard simply gave out, that damn thing was always problematic. When Dad got back, he tried everything before we decided it was hopeless - she's really gone - and we should just try to save what we could, we removed my hard drive and put it in his computer and I was extremely relieved to find it was fine and I hadn't lost anything.

So where do we go from here?
Well, my brother's new school provided him with a brand new, fully loaded mac, leaving his old Alienware laptop sitting in his room, collecting dust, so...
I miss my desktop very much and for all it's quirks, it was mine and we had an understanding. The few things that I had just accepted wouldn't work with my old computer; Livejournal, for example now work just fine but I am finding the shortcomings of the alienware to be much more frustrating. The worst  so far is that I can't download photos from my Kodak DX7630 and repeated attempts to install software that might allow this have failed, ending with a vague message including error code 1601x17x2103064800x, of which I can't find any explanation online.
