And to show you what a spread looks like:
That's the Celtic Cross style spread, which is what I use.
And here's
.
According to the first card, the Four of Wands, you have recently met the challenge of a new creative idea, or some kind of creative project. You applied hard work and now you can reap the solid reward which has been earned through that effort. You have every right to celebrate the results of your efforts. This seems to be the general situation of this period in your life.
The High Priestess appears representing the factors which conflict with your celebratory situation. She is an image of the link with the mysterious inner world Psychology has labeled “the unconscious”. This is the world of undiscovered potentials and contains the darker, more primitive facets of your personality . The High Priestess is the embodiment of that part of us which knows the secrets of this inner world. What this card augurs is the heightening of the powers of intuition and you may have an encounter of some kind with the hidden night world. It may manifest as an interest in the occult or esoteric, or perhaps the effects of a powerful dream or the feeling that “something” is at work in your life. Basically this dip into the preternatural seems to distract from the celebration of hard work signified by the first card.
The atmosphere of situation that hangs over you in the immediate present is shown by the card representing The World. What this card shows is an emphasis that this a period of achievement, a period of a triumphant conclusion of a matter or realizing a goal. Though this card focuses more on the spiritual goals that lead to the possibilities of integrating the opposites within your personality.
The interior and hidden drive for, the reason perhaps behind this time for celebration is that you’ve come to an end. A chapter in your life must reach its conclusion, and as the card signifying this is Death, it may mean a time of difficult struggle perhaps. At any rate, some phase you’ve recently been going through must end. The card of Death does not imply that the end is a bad or good thing in itself, but it’s a necessity and whether it’s painful or not depends on if you can accept and recognize the necessity of endings. I’m not sure whether the need for this end is what drove you to strive hard for something, which resulted in reward. It seems to point towards that.
The influential situation or atmosphere of the recent past turns up as the King of Cups, an ambivalent, paradoxical figure. He symbolizes the wounded healer, a figure who through compassion and empathy can heal others yet who cannot heal his own hurt in the realm of the heart and emotions. He is an individual who longs to be in touch with the world of feeling, and tries constantly to help others to relate, yet who lacks the trust in his own personal life, and therefore can’t ultimately achieve the fulfilling relationship desired due to an unwillingness to relinquish control. This need for control in relationships is due to past hurts and therefore he can’t really become comfortable with the realms of emotion because he holds back. This seems to show you recently experienced this ambivalent side of yourself, which influenced events, choices, situations leading to your current situation.
Forthcoming influences, shown here as the Four of Cups is a card depicting divine discontent. Everything seems fine and good on the outside, but there is an irrevocable, growing awareness that something is wrong. Something isn’t being dealt with. Especially in matters of the heart. The card augurs a time of dissatisfaction, boredom and depression within a relationship. There is a feeling of being let down, or cheated, perhaps because of unrealistic expectations placed on the relationship or the other person. This dissatisfaction can lead to a long-standing, unexpressed resentment or it can lead to looking more deeply at the relationship, which is the harder of the two because you must face the self-delusions and unrealistic expectations.
Where you find yourself now is at a crossroads of sorts. Your card, the Lovers, augurs that a choice of some kind, usually in love, must be made. It could also be a choice between love and a career, or some creative activity. This card advices you to look carefully at the implications of your choice, rather than being driven blindly by instinct or feeling.
Others seem to see your situation as depicted by your signifying card, though here it is shown by the card of Judgment, which does speak of a conclusion with rewards, but with a twist. The card Judgment augurs a time when the rewards of past efforts appear. It seems people also see that you’ve worked hard, and now deserve to experience the benefits of your hard work. They also seem to see this as a good time to sum-up and realize how what you’ve been doing has shaped the future that awaits you. An end of a chapter in your life. They see it as a more ambiguous time though, since Judgment not only shows an end, but implies a disturbing confrontation with all your own evasions and self-betrayals. It’s a time to be truthful with yourself and the reward may not always be pleasant. But this is just how others see things.
Under hopes and fears, the Queen of Wands appears. She is the image of loyalty of the heart and strength of creative imagination to sustain the heart’s chosen goals. She is industrious, creative, versatile, strong-willed and talented. She is the figure of the “Superwoman” who can love, be loyal in a relationship and is strong willed enough to rule her own world and doesn’t need a strong shoulder to lean on, or socially accepted labels such as “wife” to make her worth while and a confidant individual. It seems it is the time for you to meet a woman like that who will help you realize these qualities within yourself, or perhaps you’re already experiencing them, and maybe it’s a little frightening, the prospect of standing alone, even if you have the strength.
The last card, Final Outcome is the Two of Swords. This card also points to an end of something, like the Four of Wands, Judgment and the World, though it isn’t “final”, it’s just the natural outgrowth of this phase in your life which you are going through. It reflects a state of paralysis, where opposing forces have created a standstill and no movement is possible without strife. It’s a the polarization, the conflict of opposing principles which leads to an emotional tone of an uncomfortable state of precariously balanced calm beneath which there is great tension and anxiety. You know something must change but may be afraid of doing anything to inaugurate change, perhaps preferring to blind yourself rather than risk the conflict which must come anyway. The card implies a state of tense balance where there is a refusal to face some impending situation of conflict. A more creative way to handle this situation would to try and face what’s before you instead of trying to preserve the status quo.
