Jeter hits slump out of the park
First-pitch homer snaps 0-for-32 skid

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter went 32 at-bats without a hit, and answered question after question about the hitless skid, which had grown into the talk of the town over the past week.
Thursday, Jeter put a halt to that streak, belting the first pitch he saw from Oakland's Barry Zito over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season. The hit was Jeter's first in the past eight games. He had been without a hit since April 20.

The crowd of more than 35,000 went wild for the Yankees' captain, who came out for a curtain call after a long ovation from the home fans.

The homer was the 12th leadoff shot of his career.

Zito's presence on the mound may have been a welcome sight for Jeter, who entered the game with a .438 career mark (7-for-16) against the former Cy Young Award winner.

Jeter took early batting practice at the Stadium before Thursday's game, the slump obviously on his mind.

"I'd be lying to you if I said I didn't think about it," Jeter said before the game. "When you're hitting, you've got to be able to keep it out of your mind, but it's all anyone talks about. You have to think about it because you're discussing it all the time."

Jeter's 0-for-32 was the longest hitless streak by a Yankee since 1977, when Jimmy Wynn also went 32 at-bats without a hit.

Oscar Gamble went hitless in 31 consecutive at-bats from 1981-82, while Willie Randolph didn't get a hit in 30 straight at-bats to end the 1988 season.

"It's New York. Things get magnified -- though this is a long time for anybody, let alone a guy of Jeter's ability," said manager Joe Torre before Thursday's game. "If there was anybody I could pick who could handle it emotionally, he'd be at the top of that list."

The longest current hitless streak in the Majors belongs to Toronto pitcher Pat Hentgen, who hasn't gotten a hit in his last 40 at-bats.

Even with the home run, Jeter is hitting just .169, with two hits in his last 39 at-bats.

"I've struggled before, but I've felt worse than I do now," Jeter said. "This isn't like the worst I've felt -- it's the worst the results have been."
